Mixing with the Best (HSR Nov 86)

muzines.co.uk

The Soundcraft 200SR mixer is a robust and versatile choice for musicians who need a reliable desk for both live and studio settings. Praised for its rugged yet elegant design, it offers flexibility with its 8-, 16-, or 24-input options and intuitive controls, making it ideal for quick adjustments during live performances. The EQ section, while simplistic, is musically effective, providing a balance between usability and sound quality. However, its lack of tape return sockets and limited auxiliary configuration may restrict recording applications. Overall, it's a commendable pick for multi-purpose use, especially for gigging musicians who need gear to perform double duty.

Work/Mods in progress

I've got a long way to go on this particular desk but I'll update as I continue the mods. For now? Yeah, it's a...troublesome beast. I'll be taming it over the next few months with upgrades. Until then? It's not the most fantastic board but has loads of potential....I'll update as things progress. Right now it noisy and has very limited I/O. I'm gonna fix that. 4 stars for what it can be.

oh man, had one of these I got in the late 90s for spit, old 70s 200 series with the 4 bus VUs like the one in the picture. I never got the whole thing working at the same time and it eventually got sold to a friend who I believe wound up scrapping it. Mine was noisy too, but I really liked the preamps! Its not really a professional desk, but it can be a cool summing sidecar type thing. I eventually replaced it with an ancient Teac Model 15

Yeah, I'm looking forward to updating this review when I've found time to get the mods done. I've got to screw around a bit on a modded one before & it was a massive improvement. I got my parts list & everything I just need to find the time!

its so time consuming to sit and work on servicing and updating vintage pieces, man.... plug n play folks don't appreciate the labor of love guys like us put into restorations and stuff!

Ownership. That's what people who don't work on their own gear are missing out on. That's where you really get free. Ownership breaks down the barriers & kicks off that "flow state" or whatever name is in vogue now. Eyes closed hands on knobs and really getting into left brain mode. That's when I find out I've been working for 11 hours until 6am with no idea & haven't even noticed the sun is up.
