Both good for nostalgic indie-alt and Fucking Doom Heaviness
This is my favorite amp of all time. It is durable, super light, loud, and most of all. It sounds fucking sweet! I can best liken the sound to a more usable, natural sounding big muff. it has 2 independent channels that can be played in parallel, separate, or I think you can put it in series if you use the rear outputs. This thing also has a very distinct reverb, it doesn't sound like your typical solid state-spring reverb. (I believe its analogue actually). It can get really big or, dial it in for a little more room. The two channels with two independent reverbs enable you to create some very studio sounding reverb mixing tricks; without having a studio!! even though its' fuzzy asf, it can used for a ton of different genres. I think alternative fits it best but that's just IMO. it a obviously is a great stoner-doom-sludge-drone metal/rock amp but with the right tweaks it could be used for thrash, Psychedelic, poppier stuff, Frickin whatever. Also, MOSFET and C-MOS amps (like this one) tend to have that sort of warmth that tubes do, and with the right speakers, I would guess you could get it to respond like one too. It's one of those amps that really has its own color no matter what eq or speaker, it sort of always sounds like a Sunn Beta Lead; but somehow also very versatile. (keep in mind I've only tried mine through 2 or 3 speakers but I've also heard other people on youtube and such creating sounds very similar). The best way I can describe this amp is that it enables you to be creative. If you find one for cheap, Go grab one! if you can't find one cheaper then grab a Sunn concert lead, also similarly excellent!
Best choice for drone music on a moffat driven solid-state amplifier
This particular amplifier uses a form of digital c-mos technology, while I don't full understand every aspect of it, a clear distinction to be made is that all the levels are digital and function like that of an exponential step latter.

In early January 1990, Kurt Cobain began using three Sunn Beta Lead amplifier heads, primarily paired with unidentified 2x12 speaker cabinets. These amplifiers became his main choice during Nirvana's February-March Bleach tour and were used until Cobain destroyed them on May 1, 1990, at The Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill, NC. The following day, he switched to a Mesa Boogie Studio Preamp and a Crown Power Base 2 Poweramp, along with an Aria Pro II Cardinal Series CS-350 guitar, for a performance at The Milestone in Charlotte, NC. From May 2, 1990, to March 1, 1994, the Mesa Boogie Studio Preamp remained his primary preamp, initially with the Crown Power Base 2 until December 31, 1991, and later with the Crest Audio 4801 Poweramp, which he used for the rest of Nirvana's career.
Before the American In Utero tour, Kurt's guitar tech, Earnie Bailey, gave Pat Smear the Mesa Boogie Studio Preamp that Kurt had purchased in May 1990, along with an additional unit. Cobain then received two new Mesa Boogie Studio Preamps and an extra Crest Audio Poweramp to ensure uninterrupted performances. This information is supported by a user-uploaded photo.
This article from Gibson's website suggests that Adam Jones experimented with using a vintage Sunn "lead" head in the studio when recording Lateralus
Buzz has used Sunn Beta Leads throughout the Melvins career. Buzz has talked about them in multiple Rig Rundowns and you can see one at 8:12 in the following video.
In this interview he says he likes to use Sunn Beta Leads because they're lightweight and sound good.
"Yeah, I used to think solid state amps sucked, but the Beta Leads are really sweet. Two identical channels that you can use individually or both at the same time, which is what i do for a 'boost' sometimes. They also have plenty of gain, I don't normally use any distortion or fuzz, just a tuner and a Phase 90. Buzz from he Melvins uses them, Cobain used them, etc... They're also nice and small compared to some amps. I carry mine on the plane with me and it fits in the overhead bin."
