Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Xfer Records OTT Multiband Compressor Plugin.

Features and functionality

  • Users emphasize that the depth knob is crucial for subtle adjustments, suggesting a range of 20-60% for varying brightness or intensity, depending on the instrument.

    Source
  • It's highlighted that setting upward and downward compression both at 50% and time around 60-70% can effectively glue mixes without compromising transients.

    Source
  • The Xfer OTT plugin maintains audio phase integrity better than the Ableton version, especially crucial for retaining drum transients and bass clarity.

    Source
  • The recent update includes a GUI overhaul and adds VST3 support, enhancing compatibility and performance across various DAWs.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Owners recommend using OTT on the master bus before a limiter, with settings varying according to the track, to enhance cohesion in the mix.

    Source
  • Ideal for brightening dull samples like Rhodes pianos and transforming reverb-laden chords into ambient pads.

    Source
  • OTT is frequently used for enhancing EDM tracks, bringing a crispness to dull sounds, and is particularly valued for its ability to improve perceived audio quality in various genres.

    Source

User experience

  • Adjusting the Upwd knob is suggested to control unwanted background noise, particularly when working with real audio recordings.

    Source
  • Experimentation is encouraged, as fiddling excessively with the High, Mid, Low knobs can lead to unpredictable EQ effects, advocating instead for moderate depth adjustments.

    Source
  • Users recommend starting with the depth set between 5-20% for subtle compression, adjusting based on track needs to avoid excessive flattening.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Unlike the Ableton version, Xfer OTT does not allow individual band frequency adjustments, but this results in less phase alteration and more accurate transient retention.

    Source
  • Some users prefer the old GUI over the new one, highlighting that the visual update may not appeal to everyone despite technical improvements.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Xfer OTT is favored for its zero latency, making it suitable for real-time processing without needing additional adjustments in session timing.

    Source
  • VST3 support improves integration with modern DAWs, offering a more streamlined experience compared to the older VST2 format.

Master track titan.

Every producer needs this, in my opinion. Up/Down compression can help add more noise to your sound, and works like glue. On the master track, this is always first. I set everything to 50-75% and then turn the depth knob to 15%.

the best

i can use this on everything like the boss sp-303 vinyl sim compression effect.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

ok so basically change the depth to 50% and the in gain to a fuckton, and maybe some of the frequencies, and that's how you get some bomb ass compression.

melonadem

Use in light amounts for best results.

This here recreates an Ableton preset, if I recall correctly. I don't use Ableton, much like a ton of other people that use different DAWs, so Xfer Records decided to recreate this preset as a free plugin that can run in most any DAW.

In a nutshell: this is a multiband compressor that tries to crush frequency bands into a tight space. If a signal is too quiet, then the effect artificially increases its volume. If it's too high, it lowers it. There's three bands that affect the lows, mids and highs respectively.

If you use it at 100% depth (I think this is just a fancy ratio knob of some sort?), it'll make everything sound like it was run over by a car in a cartoon, but if you use it very tastefully (like 5-15% depth, and maybe tweaking the post volume of each band), you'll get a glossier sound. I like to use this on my master chain specifically because of that, it does its job to balance out the EQ and bring out some qualities I can't seem to quite get with a regular EQ.

pkennethk

I didn't know about the Ableton relation, interesting. Great writeup, as per usual.

Slap it

Slap some ott on that lead, call it day, go to bed, and, wake up, and put more ott on it.

great plugin by the way. just don't crank it up too much now.

OTT "Outstandingly, Terrific, Tremendous."

Xfer Records and OTT, the goateetee.

stixmations

Perfect for watery, airy sounding vocals and synths!

This is actually a very unique sounding compressor, I mainly use it for vocals for a cool watery sounding vocal. I also use this sometimes on an entire mix to make everything more louder and clear sounding.

solid free yet simple multiband compressor

title, it really is one of those "essential toolkit" plugins for most producers, overall would recommend to anyone as a plug-in padder

krzakson8

Must have VST

I think there is not much to say about this preset based multi band compressor other than its just a must have plugin to shape your sound and make it fit mix. Use it on Leads to make them stand out more. 10/10 great effort by Steve Duda!

stringtone

For a free plugin, pretty cool

This compressor is perfect for when you need to compress the crap out of something, but as the name suggests, it's pretty all-or-nothing. Pro tip: slap it on a piano to make it sound twinkly like the piano in Skrillex's song First of the Year (Equinox).

Multiband Dynamics

Sounds awesome on synths and even on master bus. This multiband compressor, very similar from the Ableton device can turn any boring synth sound or weak mix into something dynamic and powerful

dsma

Dope

cool for bringing out some highs, can totally warp sounds like you've never heard before
