Description

The Akai S1000 is a 16-bit, 44.1 kHz professional stereo digital sampler, released by Akai in 1988. The S1000 was among the first professional-quality 16-bit stereo samplers.[3] Its abilities to splice, crossfade, trim, and loop sound in 16-bit CD quality made it popular among producers in the late 80s through to the mid 90s. The S1000 used 24-bit internal processing, had digital filters and an effects send and return, and came with 2MB of RAM (expandable to 8MB).[2]

Version 2.0 of the S1000's operating system introduced primitive timestretching, allowing a sound's pitch and length to be altered independently of one another.

Critic Reviews

Akai S1000 (MT Dec 88)

muzines.co.uk

The Akai S1000 sets a new standard for samplers with its 16-bit stereo capabilities and flexible output options. Its clean, dynamic sound quality and expansive memory make it a professional studio powerhouse. While the user interface is praised for its operational simplicity, the initial sample disks are underwhelming, and there's a pesky background whine in the review model. Despite these minor flaws, the S1000's comprehensive MIDI features and the ability to integrate with existing S900 libraries are standout features. With promised updates like time-stretching, the S1000 is poised to become an essential tool for serious musicians.

Hands On: Akai S1000 Sampler (SOS Feb 92)

muzines.co.uk

The Akai S1000 stands out as a pivotal studio tool that addresses the limitations of its predecessor, the S900, with improved 16-bit resolution, stereo sampling, and expanded memory options. While it doesn't quite reach CD-quality audio, its usability and comprehensive feature set make it a benchmark in the sampler world. Some users might find looping cumbersome compared to older models, and stereo sampling could be better streamlined. However, its robustness in operation and popularity in studios make it a must-know for sampler enthusiasts.

I love my Akai'sss

Yep. I love them. I want to marry all the Akais. They make the world sound like music and they make drums that kick your pants off. Stretchy digital goodness.

If it were a person, it would be amazing at facilitating original ideas at corperate meetings. Those meetings would never be boring.

Sample movies or your backyard or your kitchen. Sample the world into your Akai and you will smile forever and the world will be an ok place.

«I’m using this with Mennie for an album track we’re doing together. It’s a 2MB memory sampler that can be used to edit and chop samples… very juicy. I got it from Mennie and I’m not sure I’ll give it back. Francesco found this for 100 Euro in an old market in Rome – a very lucky shot»

When Darren's not cajoling the crowd and telling them how "absolutely fuckin' marvellous" they are, he drops in samples and plays ambient fills with a collection of records and a couple of Technics SL1200s. He also reinforces the rhythm track with congas, timbale and a Roland Octapad triggering an Alesis SR16 and S1000.

According to this article on the making of Goldie's Timeless album from the June 1998 issue of Sound on Sound magazine, Playford says, "...there have always been things I like to constantly upgrade. It used to be my samplers. I went from the S950 to the S1000, then up to the S1100, and finally to a S3200. I can't see myself upgrading again soon."

Isham's 'orchestra pit' is, however, no slouch, with several Akais (S3200, CD3000, S1000, S1000PB and three S2000s), three Emu E4Xs, three Roland S760s, plus a selection of older units. "They each have their own characteristics — the Akais have a tremendous transient response, and for percussion they're just brilliant; the Rolands have a warmth about them. I also have so many because of the various different programmers that work in the different formats. Eric Persing of Spectrasonics pretty much works for Roland, and he's just so good that I had to have some Roland gear to take advantage of his wonderful work."

"We used Chris' music studio equipment, which were synths and samplers like Kurzweil K2000RS, Roland JV1080, Korg 01R/W, Korg Wavestation A/D, Akai S1000, Emu Ultraproteus, Ensoniq SQ80, Ensoniq VFX, Korg MS10, Oberheim Matrix 1000, Quasimidi Quasar, Roland JD 990, Waldorf Microwave, Yamaha SY77, Yamaha YS 100 and lots more, mixed on a Yamaha ProMix 01 and a Yamaha 02R digital mixing consoles. We loaded my GM midis into Chris' Cubase and from there it was easy to assign new sounds to the GM sounds. Eating pizza in Chris' studio too, awesome times to make game music! Thanks for your interest! :) Cheers, Fabian"
