Marcus Vere, the keyboardist for Living in a Box, uses the Akai S900 MIDI Digital Sampler as part of his music gear, as detailed in "Music Technology" magazine, August 1987: "Vere's hardware rundown for the album reads like just about any modern equipment listing - Emulator, Super Jupiter, DX7, TX816, Akai S900 and so on - but stops short of Fairlight or Synclavier indulgence. Technology has been a good and loyal friend of Living in a Box, but Vere is cautious about letting it get the upper hand."

Matthew Fisher confirms his use of the Akai S900 MIDI Digital Sampler in an interview with Keyboard Review, stating, "I played various notes on the organ, recorded them and then took them back and put them into the S900. I mix that with a churchy sound on the JX-8P – they mix quite nicely together."

Both Thomas Leer and Claudia Brücken have home studio setups, although Brücken's is at an early stage in its development. Having lost his Fairlight, Leer has had to settle for a less elaborate, though still useful, personal system. He now owns an Amstrad PC running Voyetra Sequencer Plus software, linking it up to an Akai S900, Yamaha DX7 and Roland Jupiter 6 - the only surviving keyboard from his 1984 line-up.

BOTH CLIMIE AND Fisher have their own separate home set-ups. These have Fostex B16's, A&H mixing desks and recently acquired D50's in common, but very little else. Climie works mainly with the Sequential Studio 440 linked to a Macintosh run Performer sequencing program, while Fisher prefers the Atari based Steinberg Pro24 driving a combination of DX7, TX802, Akai S900 and LinnDrum. Between them they also have a full complement of effects including the Roland SRV2000 ("thoroughly recommended") and the Yamaha REX50.

"I've got the old bog-standard Akai S900, a Prophet VS which I think is a very under-rated keyboard, a Mirage and an Oberheim Matrix 6", he reveals. "The VS has got some great sounds, although the keyboard tends to be a bit mushy. There's a great function on it where you can make random waveforms and random sounds ad infinitum. It just comes up with some fantastic Dr Who 'dalek sounds' and all kinds of weird stuff. Having said that, I like sampling myself. I like sounds that are real. I never got into programming, I was never very good at that."
