Description

Introduced in 1969, this conservatively-rated 55W all-tube amplifier head was used for both guitar and bass. This model was "replaced" by the B-25B sometime in 1970--they are essentially identical electrically, so the name change was probably a marketing decision to clear room for the V2, a head of similar wattage. Certainly a little under-powered for bass by today's standards, the B-25 is still universally praised as a sublime rehearsal/recording amp.

Reviews

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Ampeg B-25.

Build quality

  • The B25 features a chrome chassis for models from 1970; later models have a black back panel.

    Source
  • The amp can feature blue graphics, which were only used until the end of 1971, indicating its vintage status.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • A common issue is the B25's output being wired for one or two 16 ohm cabs, often requiring a dummy plug for an 8 ohm load.

    Source
  • Cathode bypass caps on the phase inverter are often 125u/16V or 125u/25V, with Sprague offering a compatible 120u/75V alternative.

    Source
  • 30uf/600V capacitors are challenging to source; Fliptops is a recommended supplier for these uncommon parts.

    Source
  • The original 7027A power tubes are becoming scarce, with reissues from New Sensor and JJ being viewed as slightly weaker alternatives.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The B25 is brighter than the B15 and similar to channel 2 of a vintage SVT but with less push.

    Source
  • The Ampeg B25, when overdriven with a guitar, closely resembles the sound of the late '60s/early '70s Ampeg SVTs used by the Rolling Stones.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners often separate the transformer taps to different jacks for better flexibility in cab connections.

    Source
  • An added impedance selector switch is a beneficial upgrade, allowing for better matching with different cab impedances.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • $600 is reasonable for a B25 if no major repairs are needed; expect additional expenses for updates like caps and a 3-prong cord.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The B25 uses a 12AX7-based preamp instead of the octal 6SL7 design found in other Ampeg models like the B18N.

    Source
  • Channel 1 is brighter and better for guitar, while channel 2 provides more low-end, making it ideal for bass use.

    Source
  • The amp includes treble and bass knobs, plus ultra-hi and ultra-lo switches that re-voice the amp for different tonal options.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The B25 pairs well with a 1x12 cab for rehearsals and low-volume shows, while a speaker merger can enhance its performance for gigging.

    Source

User experience

  • Players note that the bright inputs reduce bass slightly, offering a unique tonal option.

low wattage, great sound

These amps need to have a 3 prong power cord (no pun intended) attached and the 'death cap' snipped, but they are excellent small venue and recording amps. The sound and design is based on the portaflex, but you can really 'tune' them to fit the gig via cabinet choice. Expensive to retube due to the rare 7199 pentode/triode phase inverter. Can be modded to accept a more plentiful pentode/triode with minimal change in tone. The 7199 is the crème de la crème though, used in dynaco hifi amps etc.... sort of an ef86 and 12au7 combo tube.
