Ampeg Portaflex PF-20T/PF-50T Heads, PF-112HLF Cab review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

Ampeg's PF-20T Bass Head delivers classic, warm tones that are perfect for recording and smaller gigs. Its lightweight build and solid construction make it portable, but it struggles to hold its own in loud band settings without additional support. While the sound is impressive straight out of the box, the head lacks power compared to its PF-50T counterpart. Additionally, the PF-112HLF cab is lightweight yet has a cumbersome single handle, making it less convenient to carry. Overall, this setup shines for home use but falls short in live scenarios without a PA.

Ampeg: THE Sound of Electric Bass

While I have zero first-hand experience with the vaunted Ampeg B-15, it has been reported that the PF-20T is about as close as one can get without spending big money on a vintage head. So when a complete Portaflex rig came up on FB for the astoundingly low amount of $400, I had to buy it.

Wow! I am so glad that I did. I've never owned a Valve bass amp before, and I'm completely stunned by this one.

This IS the sound we've heard on hundreds of recordings. This is amazing!

There was a bit of low-frequency buzz, so I replaced the OEM Ruby tubes with JJs, and that fixed the problem.

This head is perfect. Totally, completely, and absolutely perfect.
