Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Ampeg SVT-AV Tube Bass Head.

Use cases and applications

  • The SVT-AV is described as perfect for achieving classic rock bass tones reminiscent of famous rock records, making it a staple for those seeking that specific sound.

    Source
  • A 6x10 cab can be a more practical choice over an 8x10 for its similar volume output and easier transportability in smaller vehicles.

    Source
  • The SVT-AV's natural tube distortion is well-suited for genres requiring a warm, vintage sound, offering a full, rich tone even at high volumes.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners report that floor wedges often struggle with bass tones, suggesting in-ear monitors (IEMs) for better performance monitoring.

    Source
  • The SVT-AV is reported to sound best when cranked, causing challenges for home use without excessive volume.

    Source
  • Some owners find the SVT-AV challenging to transport due to its weight, comparing it to moving a fridge, and suggest having roadies for heavy lifting.

    Source
  • Owners report that a 300W tube amp like the SVT-AV can rival an 800W solid-state amp in perceived loudness, especially in mids-heavy musical contexts.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Using a mic like the Audix D6 for the cab can give more control over tone in a live setting compared to relying solely on DI outputs.

    Source
  • Regular maintenance is essential for tube amps like the SVT-AV, but many claims of unreliability are overblown when the amp is properly serviced.

    Source

Comparisons

  • An SVT-2 Pro includes a graphic EQ and distortion circuit, offering more tonal versatility compared to the SVT-CL.

    Source
  • The SVT-VR offers a dual-channel design with no master volume, providing a "dirtier" vintage tone, while the SVT-CL is cleaner with a master volume control.

    Source
  • The SVT-AV is often compared to the Sansamp for its ability to emulate the iconic Ampeg tone in a more portable format.

    Source
  • An owner compared the SVT-AV to Ashdown amps, noting the Ampeg has a unique "extra mojo" that others lack, especially when paired with an 8x10 cabinet.

    Source
  • Tube amps like the SVT-AV often outperform solid-state amps in volume due to their ability to exceed rated wattage with pleasing distortion, unlike the harsh clipping in solid-state amps.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The SVT-AV lacks a DI out, which users supplement with external DI boxes like the SVT-DI for better integration with PA systems.

    Source
  • The SVT-AV can handle both dirty and clean sounds effectively, making it versatile for various rock genres.

    Source
  • The Ampeg SVT-AV's 300W tube power can produce higher sound pressure levels (SPL) due to tube distortion characteristics, effectively competing with higher wattage solid-state amps.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Despite its higher cost and weight, the SVT-AV provides unparalleled volume and tonal quality, justifying its investment for those seeking classic tube sound.

If you pause at 2:59 really quickly, you will notice that Ben is using an anniversary edition of the Ampeg SVT-CL which is known as the SVT-AV. It looks like he changed some of the knobs and installed a custom grill cloth though. Phew...that was a tough one to find.

Ampeg SVT-VR

newer

Its a newer and a bit different version of the AV. The VR has two plug ins, so you can basically plug two different basses in at the same time. The VR has also no "frequency" control. These are the "big changes".
