Description

The ATS-Analog Tape Simulator uses the revolutionary AnaMod Process™ for modeling complex analog circuitry entirely in the analog domain. Specially developed analog building blocks are coded to replicate the behavior of analog tape.

Unlike digital plug-ins or processor-based outboard gear, there is no latency, and no A/D or D/A conversions to compromise the sound. The result is a faithful recreation of the original response, without using the original analog hardware.

All of the important features of a two-track analog tape machine are found in the ATS-1, including speed selection, bias, LF Record and HF Repro EQ, and the option of adding tape hiss, if desired. The reference Record level, as indicated on the illuminated VU meters, can be adjusted from 0 to +12 dBu in 3 dB increments.

The ATS-1 accurately models the behavior of specific tape machines and tape formulations, and allows the user to select from up to four machine and tape types. The unit ships with two tape machine cards (M-800 and M-79) and two tape formulation cards (T-GP9 and T-456). Optional machine and tape types are available on easy-to-install cards.

Critic Reviews

AnaMod ATS1

soundonsound.com

The AnaMod ATS-1 impresses with its superbly accurate tape emulation, offering the best analogue tape characteristics available. Its stylish, retro design and full parameter controls, including adjustable tape hiss, add to its appeal. While the separate I/O level controls aren't ideal for stereo use and the lack of clear machine and tape type indicators is a drawback, the ATS-1’s novel analogue computing techniques deliver effects ranging from subtle to blatant, making it a creative studio tool. Despite its high cost, the ATS-1 is a new benchmark for hardware analogue tape emulation systems.

George Shilling reviews AnaMod ATS-1 that models the effects of analogue tape

recordproduction.com

The AnaMod ATS-1 impresses with its convincing replication of vintage tape machine sonics, offering a desirable and enjoyable enhancement to audio. Its all-analog design effectively captures the essence of tape, with realistic controls and customizable options for tape formulations. While the unit is expensive and lacks some traditional tape machine features like varispeed, it excels in delivering a subtle, magical enhancement that resembles the authentic 'off-tape' sound. The ATS-1's build quality and user experience are top-notch, making it a valuable addition for those seeking classic tape warmth, despite its price tag.

"*So when you mix, do you still use quite a bit of outboard gear, or are you mostly in the box except for a few things? *

"Lots of outboard. It's a balance for me, between running Logic, everything coming out of Logic into the TL Audio desk, and then using a lot of—do you know Purple Audio? I've got one of their limiters; I'll use that. I've got an SSL XLogic channel strip, I've got a Neve channel strip, an API, an [AnaMod] ATS-1, which is like an analog tape simulator. Some stuff like that, basically. It's a proper blend."
