Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about BBE Sonic Stomp SS-92.

Features and functionality

  • The BBE Sonic Stomp boosts carefully selected bass and treble frequencies, with a slight delay in bass frequencies due to its circuit design.

    Source
  • It's noted that the BBE Sonic Stomp employs a "state variable filter," functioning effectively as a simple two-band EQ rather than a sophisticated sound enhancer.

    Source

Comparisons

  • An EQ pedal offers more flexibility compared to the BBE Sonic Stomp, which acts as a fixed 2-band EQ and doesn't affect mid-range frequencies significantly.

    Source
  • The TC Spark clean boost is often compared favorably to the EP Booster for adding high-end clarity, with the Spark Mini also recommended for its reputable performance.

    Source
  • The BBE Sonic Stomp is often viewed as a less essential tool if your amp is already being mic'd for live sound, as its tone benefits do not carry through the PA system.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • A graphic EQ can help boost midrange frequencies to prevent a "thin" tone, which can be crucial for blending well in a band setting.

    Source
  • The TC Electronic Mimiq, when run in stereo, enhances both clean and high-gain tones, adding depth without overwhelming the sound.

    Source
  • The Voodoo Labs Giggity is recommended for players seeking to enhance presence and clarity in their sound.

    Source
  • The Nocturne Dyno Brain and Atomic Brain are praised for adding a unique "secret sauce" to guitar tones, suggesting they offer a distinct sound enhancement.

    Source
  • Owners suggest it is particularly useful for hobbyists who play through backline amps, as it helps them achieve a more desirable tone without high-end gear.

    Source

User experience

  • Users have noted that the "Lo-Contour" and "Process" knobs on the BBE Sonic Stomp target specific frequency ranges for bass and treble without much impact on mid-range.

    Source
  • Owners report that the MXR 6-band EQ, when combined with a compressor, significantly enhances clean tones and rounds out overdrive, fuzz, or distortion effects.

    Source
  • Some users describe the BBE Sonic Stomp as "snake oil," indicating skepticism about its advertised benefits despite liking its impact on their sound.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • It's suggested to experiment with compressor settings as compression can thin out or fatten up the sound, especially important for country music styles.

The SINGLE best pedal that you'll hardly hear...

The BBE Sonic Stomp Pedal, is probably the single best pedal you can add to your pedal board. It's influence on your overall sound, is almost transparent. I think that, in most situations, this is one of the greatest things a pedal could do. Transparency is wonderful thing, when you consider, you're adding sparkle & bark, with one pedal that doesn't "color" you tone in any way. You can dial in any number of tones with just 2 knobs & a switch. From spanky Tele beef-up to a raining in the mid-range domination of a Les Paul. It will add or diminish those parts of your tone that you're either lacking or hating. After 2 years of gigging, it's still the same pedal I bought (a little less paint on the metal case). Great simple add-on, it's "parametric-like" treatment of you tone, (IMO) makes your EQ pedal a thing of the past. I guess it all depends on what you're looking for. But, if you've found yourself trying to push your EQ pedal far beyond it's capabilities, just try a Sonic Stomp out. It's NOT going to hit you over the head. Oh man, what it does for your tone out in the audience nothing short of amazing!

Set it and forget it!

Yup. It's always on. I started using it with my bass rig ... and I don't use effects on bass ... then moved it to my guitar board. I may get another one for bass eventually. It just fattens the sound and you control the fat. Right now, I'm playing a PRS Hollowbody Spruce with piezo and the piezo has seemed to lack guts in the bass area. The BBE has been an important part of the fix for that. Now the PRS piezo, although it does not sound like a Martin J-40, does have some low-end punch. Woo Hoo!

Can't go wrong with the price: and sounds great too

Yes, for the price it really is a neat unit. I wouldn't want to pay much more for it though. The lo contour is somewhat like a resonance control, and the process acts somewhat like a presence control (although I think it boosts around 2khz). It does at a sense of tightness to your sound, almost like compression, but of course not exactly like it. You just have to try it yourself and see if you like it.

raspad_atoma

Snake oil.

Removes the mids, makes your sound flat and compressed. Replace that with an eq pedal. It may be good for bass players, but not for guitar.

P

Two buttons but really a must have ...for better clean sounds with clearness and brightness

This Small pedal is magic , you can magnify both bass and treble tone to a brighter or darker one, in font of the amp or in the loop (S/R) or at the end of a serial / parallel pedal board ...... really efficient for signal ...... round and bright .... It can also reduce the loudness like an equalizer can do it ...a Great One

Mentioned in this March 24, 2014 interview for Simon Poulton's Tumblr "Bass Ramblings & Other Thoughts".

I mainly use a 1968 Jazzmaster and a 2011 Les Paul into Musicman HD130 head and an old Marshall 8x10 cabinet. I use a lot of pedals but my pedal board never stays the same for long. The mainstays are: Speaker Cranker Overdrive, Grand Orbiter Phase Machine, Ghost Echo Reverb, Disaster Transport Delay and a BBE Sonic Stomp.
