a start fuzz
I really love this pedal, i got an used one of course when i went to Chicago, was my second pedal, and i could not wait to use it. When i plugged it the first time i could feel the metal in my hand (all of my other ones were plastic, sniff sniff, tear tear) and i had a cheap made in china guitar, and an awful amplifier, but it totally changed my sound, it boost my notes, and sustain my licks, i was finally where i wanted to be, and since that i been finding my sound, totally recomend this one if you are starting, today i wish i could have a vintage fuzz face like the on Jimmy use to have.
Now the negatives are that stars humming a lot, and i mean a lot once you get the volume dial over 3 or 4, and you must rely on mostly in your amps volume, fuzz goes great to the max. great to buy for under $90

a silicon fuzz will hum a little but shouldn't be THAT noisey, some of the problem is probably from single coil hum and there's no way around that is you like true single coil tone... also, you probably don't want to crank any fuzz pedal's volume all the way up other than the more distortion type 'fuzzes' like the big muff unless you keep the fuzz low or plan to keep your guitar volume dialed back (this will counterintuitively brighten the tone and give you that Hendrix rhythm sound thru a decent marshall top)... also, make sure the fuzz is the 1st thing in your chain, even before a tuner unless you have a true bypass tuner like a polytune or korg pitchblack because if anything comes between the pickup and the fuzz the fuzz will misbehave getting thin, brittle and noisey.... its an impedance thing, but buffered fuzz designs just don't have the sound of the old arbiter and sola designs
you don't want a vintage fuzzface, they vary wildly from unit to unit and are incredibly finicky even as fuzzes go (good one night, terrible the next, pick up radio stations etc, even the blue box silicon versions like Hendrix used in the Axis era)
