Description

Nathan Junior is our long time demo guitarist, a veteran of Portland indie rock, and now a non-profit organizer. Part of the proceeds for every Nathan Junior is going directly to Musical Independence - a non-profit organization in the small town of Independence OR whose mission is to provide much needed music lessons to citizens of all walks of life. Nathan has a building, a plan, and years of both teaching and music business experience.

We wanted to hit a different price point with the Nathan Junior amp…instead of our usual Mercury transformers/Jupiter capacitors combination we found some domestically produced components that sound fantastic and fit the form factor better. For 5 watts in a tiny package, it sounds shockingly big. We think it’s the perfect grab and go recording/ small gig combo.

Specs 1 x JJ 6V6 power tube, 1 x 12AX7, 1 x 12DW7 5 watts Speaker outputs: 1 x 8 ohm Volume, Treble, Bass, Reverb Reverb is all wet at the highest setting, allowing for creative use in tandem with other amps

Comparisons

  • The Benson Nathan Junior is preferred over the Supro 64 Reverb for its superior clean tones, despite both being popular 5-watt amps.

    Source
  • Nathan Jr. is preferred over a "blued" Princeton reissue for its clarity and volume, providing superior tonal qualities without excessive bass distortion.

    Source
  • The Vinny is described as "mini tweed on steroids," contrasting with the clean, chimey tones sought by those who prefer the Benson Nathan Junior or other chime-focused amps.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Users often pair the Nathan Junior with single-coil pickups to utilize it as an overdrive, rolling off the volume for control.

    Source
  • The amp pairs well with various guitars, including Stratocasters and SGs, but may be too bright with certain Telecasters, depending on the specific guitar.

    Source
  • For players seeking Vox-like chime, the Nathan Junior or the Carr Telstar are recommended over the Vinny, which lacks the desired clean chime.

    Source

  • Owners describe the Nathan Jr. as surprisingly loud for its size, maintaining clarity without "farting" out with excessive bass frequencies.

    Source
  • At home settings, users find the Nathan Jr. effective for achieving quiet gain, though it may require a dirt pedal for breakup at extremely low volumes.

    Source
  • One owner recommends saving for the Benson Earhart if Vox AC30 chime is desired, suggesting the Vinny may not satisfy those tonal expectations.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The Nathan Jr. is noted to have stunning reverb and can achieve good grind with the volume above 5, though it is loud for a small combo amp.

    Source
  • The amp takes pedals well but can be moody with Tube Screamers, indicating some pedal sensitivity.

    Source

Other

  • The Bel-Ray is mentioned as an alternative for chime and bark, offering versatile sounds without unwanted tones.

An incredible little amp that never misses.

The Benson amps are hyped a lot, it's true, and some say they're overhyped. I don't know about all the hype, but I finally got one after debating for years and can share what I know: I've been playing it for the last several years and it's been used live as well as on several of my recordings.

This amp is the best I've ever owned, and more than enough for anything I've needed for. I use it in my home studio, I have used it live for shows, and have even played several shows where I've used it un-mic'd and it is more than loud enough. Bonus points for being really easy to load in and out for shows! This amp sounds phenomenal clean, and when the tubes warm up and you push it a bit, it gets that grit and crunch that I haven't ever heard replicated by a pedal.

The build quality is amazing. The finish is beautiful. I could write a lot longer of a review, but I'll settle for saying that to me, this is an heirloom amp that I will never sell. 5 stars, I can't say enough about it. Benson amps are worth the investment!
