Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Fender 65 Princeton Reverb 15W 1x10 Tube Guitar Combo Amp.

Features and functionality

  • The Princeton Reverb lacks a master volume, requiring high volume for natural overdrive, which may not suit home use without attenuation.

    Source
  • Princeton amps are praised for their superior tremolo effect, considered by some as significantly better than other models in its class.

    Source
  • The PRRI's touch sensitivity means that playing style significantly affects volume, allowing subtle control over sound dynamics.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Using an attenuator like Two Notes Torpedo Captor or THD Hot Plate allows for high amp gain at lower volumes, important for home use.

    Source
  • Replacing the power tube in a Blues Junior with a 12AY7 can help control volume, though the Princeton provides superior clean tones without mods.

    Source
  • A user modified a 77 Princeton Reverb by blackfacing it and adding a fixed master volume, enhancing its versatility for home use.

    Source
  • The 12" Cannabis Rex speaker offers a rich, full sound while maintaining a great top end, making it a favored choice among users for the PRRI.

    Source
  • Users tend to prefer the Cannabis Rex over the Jensen Alnico in the PRRI for its richness and compatibility with various tonal setups.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Vox AC15, with its master volume, allows for low-volume overdrive, making it a better home-use option compared to the Princeton Reverb.

    Source
  • The Princeton Reverb with a 10" speaker is noted for having a punchier midrange, while the 12" version offers a fuller, more classic sound.

    Source
  • The Deluxe Reverb is described as having more headroom and a fuller sound compared to the Princeton, which is lighter and more suitable for smaller venues.

    Source
  • A 12" speaker can sound "bigger" and "beefier," while a 10" might feel "boxy," though the 12" doesn't necessarily mean louder due to speaker sensitivity variations.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Princeton Reverb excels in providing a clean tone, ideal for users who rely on pedals for overdrive and layering with a looper.

    Source
  • At volume 4, a 12" PRRI can reach a level comparable to a TV that's slightly too loud, suitable for home use but potentially challenging in apartments.

    Source

User experience

  • Users report the Princeton Reverb's volume at 1.5-2 is quieter than guitar strings, making it suitable for quiet practice with pedal overdrive.

    Source
  • Owners report that the Princeton excels in home recording due to its ability to reach its sweet spot at lower volumes, reducing noise and reflections.

Fender 65 Princeton Reverb Reissue Review

guitarpickzone.com

The Fender '65 Princeton Reverb Reissue captures the essence of the classic Blackface sound with its scooped midrange, sparkly highs, and big bass, ideal for studio use and small gigs. Its simple controls offer great tonal flexibility, and the built-in reverb and tremolo add to its charm. However, it's not without flaws; the amp can be a bit bright out of the box and may rattle at high volumes, which might be problematic in a studio setting. Additionally, while it's loud for 15 watts, it struggles to stay clean at gig volumes. The price might be steep, but the quality and potential longevity make it a worthwhile investment for dedicated Fender enthusiasts.

Great amp, not fond of stock speaker

I love this little lightweight amp, great tone, compact, you’d be surprised at the bass response it puts out with just a 10” speaker. I wasn’t fond of the stock Jensen though, so I swapped it for the same Alnico Jensen found in the handwired RI version, sounds much better, less flub, more mids, less aggressive high end, kind of makes it sound a little more like a brownface or tweed I guess. Great tremelo and reverb as well!

I love these amps, great weight, power, as loud as you'd need in most cases for jazz or traditional country

I'm a long time Princeton junky. My newer PRRI is a very good amp. It's got the factory Celestion Ten speaker that sounds really nice. Loud (and clean) enough for live gigs/church use but you might have to mic it up. Nice reverb and tremolo. I don't use the reverb that much live since most rooms already have enough for me, but it's nice in the living room, or for doing surf. I love these for the weight and ease of carry. You can use them from the living room to the stage. No idea why they don't make more amps like these.

Can be seen clearly for most of the performance but most clearly around when they start playing "Blues" around 1:35:30. Notice the 6 knobs, 2 instrument inputs and large "Princeton" graphic. Cannot confirm exact type of Princeton Reverb so I chose the default amp. Can also be seen in video I took of him live at The Stone Church in Brattleboro Vermont. Covered by a towel but still recognizable as a Princeton.
