Underrated. It has some really good effects inside.
I think the Boss VF-1 is a really great multi-effects unit. I do understand the other reviewer comments but I have a different take on this box.
I do not play guitar. Instead, I hook it up into Logic Pro via a RME audio interface and route sounds through it. This is where it shines. The midi implementation is top quality. There are some really excellent, circa 2000 era algorithms in this box and in effect, I use it a bit like an external DSP unit. Inside Logic, I run it in parallel so that I can blend a wet/dry signal and get a very good sound.
I tend to ignore all of the cab simulations and use things like the rotary multi, chorus, slow gear, slicer and RSS (Rolands virtual surround sound, in stereo).
Through midi, I do not have to use the main 'Numeric Value' dial which sadly, is pretty bad on all of my VF-1s. In the end, I wrote a software editor for it so that I do not have to touch that dial again and now, it is a class piece of hardware.
Preferred Settings + Usage:

Value knob is made out of kleenex. DO NOT BUY!
Back when I started building my rack rig, I was hoping that the Boss VF-1 would be a nice compliment to my guitar rig. However, after about a year's worth of usage, the value knob was completely stripped, and now I can't even change presets or adjust settings on it. This is a major reliability issue, and it's not just me who's went through this. Spend 30 seconds on Google and you'll run into all SORTS of defective issues from the Boss VF-1.
As Glenn Fricker would say, sound quality doesn't matter when a critical piece of gear can fail when you're JUST trying to set it up.
The sounds from the VF-1 works as advertised. However, they apparently made the Value knob out of kleenex. It's NOT road-worthy, so unless you're happy with spending more money trying to fix this goddamn thing, DO NOT BUY!

Great for the price
These are good little boxes. Especially for the price. They don't get too strange, and they kinda suck. But in a good and useful way. I had two and used them a lot. Sold them in my studio purge and If I found one locally I might buy it again.
They're ugly.
