For the demo recordings, Satriani used either a Palmer or Marshall SE100 speaker simulator paired with one of his many guitar amps, including those from his signature Peavey JSX Series. In the studio, he played into either a CAD D189 or an SM57. For clean guitar parts and acoustic guitar, he used a KM54.

The CAD D189 would later be included in Satriani's signature CAD microphone pack.

"After extensive A/B testing, CAD Microphones were chosen by Production Manager Maceo Price for several key functions on Lil’ Wayne’s sold-out 2009 I AM MUSIC Tour.

(...) 'We also used CAD D189s for talkback. These are really important for our show because of the expanded space our guys work in. They play from 55 feet up down to 0 feet, and each one passes through side arrays, front fills and wedges on the upper decks. The CAD talkback mics keep working for us because their rejection characteristics are so effective.'"

Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip used the CAD D 189 along with the CAD Trion 7000 ribbon mic to capture electric guitar sounds. Luke wanted to use these on amps live but ended up not getting the chance to. instead he used the D 189 on live vocals 2008-2009. The CAD Trion 7000 (also part of the Joe satriani Mic Kit luke purchased) was blended and used on studio vocals 2008-2013. It is said both CAD mics will be used to track amp sounds on the “Love Never Dies” album in 2019. Luke will be using both mics to capture electric guitar sounds coming through his VOX AC 15 w celestion greenback speaker.
