Description

The BT50 500-Series Equalizer Module by CAPI

The CAPI BT50 is a classic-style 3-band API-format equalizer module in the 500 series, faithfully modeled after the original API 550 EQ that helped define studio equalization in the late 1960s. It uses the traditional Bridged-T topology with Proportional-Q filters with boost filters embedded in feedback loops and cut filters between discrete opamps to deliver that signature punchy, musical API sound with smooth, musical filter curves. Unlike the original 550, the BT50 expands flexibility by offering five selectable frequencies for its high and low bands plus separate high-pass and low-pass sections. Built with high-quality opamps (often CA-0252 or compatible discrete designs), it provides characterful tone shaping that works well on vocals, guitars, drums, bass, or mix buses, while stepped controls offer recall-friendly operation.

Specs:

• Format: 500-series EQ module (API/VPR compatible)
• Topology: Classic Bridged-T equalizer with Proportional-Q filter behavior
• Bands: 3-band equalizer with separate high-pass (HP) and low-pass (LP) sections
• Low band: ~5 selectable frequencies (similar to vintage API 550A)
• Mid band: Center frequencies within typical midrange range (varies by implementation)
• High band: ~5 selectable frequencies, adjustable shelving/peak behavior
• HP: ~50 Hz; LP: ~15 kHz (typical values)
• Opamps: Discrete classic-style opamp options (e.g., CA-0252, GAR2520, Red Dot 2520)
• Input/Output: API 500 standard edge connector (balanced path through host rack)
• Gain Structure: Historically unbalanced input characteristic with jumpers to adjust modern high-Z loading and level compensation
• Controls: Stepped frequency and cut/boost knobs for precise recall
• Typical Use: Tone shaping on instruments, vocals, drums, mix buses, or corrective EQ duties in tracking or mix stages
