Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Dubreq Stylophone GEN X-1.

Setup and maintenance

  • The Gen X-1 requires frequent tuning adjustments due to sensitivity to temperature, humidity, and battery charge, making it challenging for consistent live performance.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The original Stylophone's octave switching feature is absent in the Gen X-1, offering unique playability for those seeking a simpler, stable tuning experience.

    Source
  • The Gen X-1 provides more sound control than the original Stylophone, aligning more with traditional synthesizer functionality rather than the limited control of the original model.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The Gen X-1's pitch knob is highly sensitive to movement, which can complicate maintaining consistent tones between sessions or during performances.

    Source
  • The Gen X-1 can emulate the original 60s sound by setting resonance to zero and cutoff to max, giving a raw unfiltered oscillator sound.

    Source
  • To minimize unwanted effects, it's recommended to turn off the LFO (set "depth" to zero) and delay switch, with attack set to zero for a cleaner sound.

    Source
  • The Gen X-1 operates as a simplified subtractive synthesizer, employing knob labels familiar to subtractive synthesis, similar to tone controls on a guitar amplifier.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Gen X-1 excels in sound experimentation rather than melody play, often requiring tweaking for each session to achieve desired tones.

    Source
  • For those starting out, it's suggested to leave filter cutoff and resonance in the middle and to set the side buttons to off for ease of use.

    Source

User experience

  • The original Stylophone is praised for its consistent tuning and sound, making it feel more like a dependable instrument with its three preset sounds.

Dubreq Stylophone GEN X-1

soundonsound.com

The Dubreq Stylophone GEN X-1 is a quirky throwback with modern twists, offering a fun and flexible experience for both nostalgic musicians and lo-fi enthusiasts. Its affordability and unique sound palette make it a tempting addition to any sonic toolkit. However, it falls short of a full-fledged synthesizer replacement due to its limited power options, potential fragility, and inherent noisiness. The ribbon controller is a standout feature, though its usability could be improved. Overall, the GEN X-1 is a charming, if niche, musical oddity best enjoyed in moderation.

Dubreq Stylophone Gen X-1 review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Dubreq Stylophone GEN X-1 is a delightful evolution of the original, maintaining its quirky charm while adding useful features like sub-octave oscillators, a low-pass filter, and delay that enhance its sound palette. It excels in delivering a unique, lo-fi synth experience, with new voicing options that add depth and character. The inclusion of a Soundstrip for finger play further expands its creative potential. However, it relies solely on battery power, limiting its use in studio setups. Overall, this enhanced Stylophone is a fun, creative tool that surpasses its predecessor in versatility.

Great inspiration from a tiny box!

The kind folks at dubreq, gifted this to me to be included on the Mandrill record I was producing. While it never fit the record, it has a fun experience and will wind up on a record one day. Maybe in the Pyrce album. If you are looking for a quirky and fun piece to inspire a line or solo or even maybe a pad or riff, this is a great option! The price tag, I believe, it quite friendly to the wallet and it runs on batteries! Bring it in the car and annoy everyone! For that matter, take it everywhere! :)
