Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Fender American Original '60s Jazzmaster.

Mods and upgrades

  • Replacing 1-meg pots with 250k or 500k pots can reduce high-end spikiness, offering a smoother tonal response.

    Source
  • Some owners replace AO Jazzmaster saddles with Mustang-style ones to prevent string jumping, which is a common issue with the stock bridge.

    Source
  • Swapping the stock bridge for a Staytrem bridge improves playability, especially when using heavier gauge strings like 11s.

    Source

User experience

  • The American Original '60s Jazzmaster's neck is compared to a Les Paul in thickness, making it potentially challenging for players who prefer slimmer neck profiles.

    Source
  • Owners report that the AO Jazzmaster's pickups are very bright, which suits certain play styles.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • To address bridge rattles and sinking screws, some owners use blue Loctite, a solution familiar to those with experience in Jazzmaster maintenance.

    Source
  • The fretboard may appear lighter and dry, requiring regular oiling to maintain its condition and playability.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The AO Jazzmaster is highly recommended for achieving the "real deal" Jazzmaster sound, especially in genres like shoegaze and post-punk where its bright tone excels.

    Source

    Source
  • The 9.5” fingerboard radius on the AO is favored over the American Vintage series by some users.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The American Professional II Jazzmaster features V-Mod II pickups, while the American Original '60s has classic 60s pickups; the tonal differences are significant, with the AO being more traditional.

    Source
  • Owners find the stock pickups on the Squier Classic Vibe Jazzmaster surprisingly comparable to Dimarzio/Fender JM pickups.

    Source
  • Some prefer the playability and feel of Japanese Jazzmasters, noting they can be more affordable and offer similar quality.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • The American Original '60s Jazzmaster is often praised for its attractive color schemes, with Olympic White and Ice Blue Metallic being particularly favored.

    Source
  • Buying used can be a safer investment as it holds its value better, reducing financial risk for prospective buyers.

    Source

Build quality

  • The thick gloss lacquer on the neck can feel slow, but light sanding with steel wool can create a more comfortable satin finish.

    Source
  • Neck binding on the AO Jazzmaster makes it feel significantly different, contributing to a chunkier neck profile than some users prefer.

Fender American Original ’60s Jazzmaster Review

guitar.com

Fender's American Original '60s Jazzmaster is a delightful nod to the past with a modern twist, making it a true Jazzmaster for purists. The vintage reissue spirit is alive with a few welcome tweaks, notably the 9.5-inch fretboard radius. The guitar's crisp, sugary sparkle and versatile tonal range make it a standout, though it may not win over those averse to its bright character. While Fender's conservative hardware choices mean some may still seek long-term upgrades, this offset is a stellar performer, particularly with a touch of overdrive. For those who cherish the Jazzmaster's heritage, this is a must-consider option, even if it doesn't quite reach out-of-the-box perfection.

The best non custom shop vintage experience

The model comes out of the factory with the bad vintage type bridge but i will give it the maximum number of stars cause i modded mine with a mastery bridge... The sound, ergonomy, weight are perfect and it plays like butter. My main guitar since the modd!

Shakey Graves’ Fender American Original ’60s Jazzmaster was updated with a Mastery bridge. It’s a new guitar, but this funky offset took a few bad hits on the road that aged it cosmetically and rendered the top switch unusable.
