Description

Dive into the legacy of grunge with the Fender Kurt Cobain Jag-Stang Electric Guitar in Fiesta Red, a tribute to the revolutionary spirit of Nirvana's frontman and his quest for the perfect sound. Celebrating the iconic Nevermind era, this guitar is more than an instrument—it's a piece of music history designed by Kurt Cobain himself, blending his favorite features of the Fender Jaguar and Mustang into a unique creation that helped define the sound of a generation.

Crafted to meet Kurt's versatile playing needs, the Jag-Stang stands out with its distinct alder body, producing a punchy tone ideal for everything from soul-stirring melodies to roaring power chords. The 24” short-scale and the 7.25” radius rosewood fingerboard ensure a playing experience that's as comfortable as it is thrilling, reducing string tension and making it easier to navigate the fretboard. The combination of vintage-style single-coil and custom humbucking pickups offers a sonic palette wide enough to cover the entire spectrum of Cobain's groundbreaking tones. With the added flexibility of the Mustang slider switches, you have the power to explore a variety of sounds, from the crystal-clear to the delightfully distorted, all at your fingertips.

Whether you're a die-hard Nirvana fan, a lover of the grunge era, or a guitarist in search of an instrument with a soul, the Jag-Stang is a testament to the creative genius of Kurt Cobain and the timeless appeal of Fender craftsmanship.

Features and functionality

  • The guitar features individual pickup on/off switches with three settings, allowing for unique out-of-phase tones that appeal to experimental players.

    Source
  • The guitar's design was based on Kurt Cobain's own "thrift shop fantasy" idea, intended more for aesthetic and novelty rather than high performance.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Squier Jaguar or Mustang with P90s or humbuckers are recommended as more authentic alternatives to what Kurt Cobain played, at a lower cost.

    Source
  • The Squier Contemporary Jaguar HH ST offers similar aesthetics and features at about half the price, with a hard tail for better tuning stability.

    Source
  • Despite its unique design, many players prefer the Fender Kurt Cobain Jaguar for its superior sound and playability.

    Source
  • Japanese-built Cobain Mustangs, which feature humbuckers, are often preferred for quality over the Jag-Stang, despite lacking signature branding.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Some have reported finding the Jag-Stang at steep discounts due to its divisive appearance, potentially making it a more affordable option for fans.

    Source
  • It's noted that the original Jag-Stang models sold for around $539, but the current price is often over $1,250, which some feel is excessive.

    Source

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • It’s suggested that the Jag-Stang might be a good choice for beginners who are drawn to its aesthetic, as personal attraction can motivate practice.

    Source
  • The small neck and frets are ideal for punk and metal but may hinder jazz or blues playing.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners have replaced the stock humbucker with a Seymour Duncan JB for a more robust sound.

    Source
  • Owners recommend swapping the stock bridge pickup as it lacks crunch, with some suggesting a Seymour Duncan humbucker for improved tone.

    Source

User experience

  • The Jag-Stang's offset weight often causes it to sit awkwardly, leading to frequent falls.

    Source
  • Some players find the neck too thin for technical playing, though it suits Nirvana's punk style well.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Many users found the original pickup switches problematic, citing accidental muting during performance. Kurt Cobain himself modified his switches by cutting them level with the pickguard.

    Source
  • The dynamic tremolo system can be problematic; some users recommend swapping out the stock bridge for a Tune-O-Matic to improve tuning stability.

Fender Kurt Cobain Jag-Stang review | Guitar World

guitarworld.com

Fender’s Kurt Cobain Jag-Stang is a nostalgic yet robust tribute, blending the best of Cobain’s influences into a well-balanced guitar. It offers an impressive tonal range, thanks to its unique pickup configuration and shorter scale length, making it a breeze for string bends and heavy gauge strings. However, its compact body may not suit everyone, and the lack of contours can detract from comfort during long sessions. Despite minor drawbacks, this reissue is a must-have for Nirvana fans and those seeking distinctive sounds.

Product Review: Fender Kurt Cobain Jag-Stang® - Guitar Girl Magazine

guitargirlmag.com

With its unique offset body and comfortable short-scale neck, the Fender Kurt Cobain Jag-Stang Electric Guitar blends nostalgia with playability. The reissue captures Cobain's vision beautifully, featuring versatile pickups that cater to a range of sounds from clean chords to gritty grunge. However, some may find the price tag of $1,299.99 steep for a model that, while iconic, might not suit every player's taste or style. Overall, this guitar is a worthy homage to a legend, perfect for fans and collectors alike, though it may not be the best fit for everyone.

Tot nu toe staat ie dus nog steeds stof te verzamelen. which translates to: On tour I once saw someone play a Fender Jag-Stang, one of those Kurt Cobain signature models.
