Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Fender Player Jazzmaster.

User experience

  • The Player II series necks are consistently noted for their excellent feel, with only minor issues such as a single warped pickguard reported.

    Source
  • Owners praise the dark rosewood neck for its comfort, comparable to American Tele and Strat models.

    Source
  • Some users experience issues with the high E string alignment, causing it to slip off the fretboard frequently, affecting playability.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The stock bridge is less harsh than the Classic Player, with improved performance when used with gain.

    Source
  • The absence of routing for a rhythm circuit in the Player II series limits retrofitting options for traditional Jazzmaster features.

    Source
  • The tremolo system is closer to the bridge than on traditional Jazzmasters, offering a larger break angle that enhances sustain.

    Source
  • The bridge spacing is noted as problematic, with string height screws needing adhesive to prevent rattling, and suggestions to upgrade to an American Pro bridge for better spacing.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The guitar excels in alternate tunings like DAEAC#E and FACGCE, appealing to math rock and midwest emo players.

    Source

  • The guitar's humbuckers are described as versatile for various genres like indie, psych, blues, and shoegaze, though not ideal for traditional Jazzmaster sounds.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Factory setup includes 9-gauge strings; many owners recommend upgrading to at least 10-gauge for optimal offset performance.

    Source
  • Owners report frequent dryness of Pau Ferro fretboards; regular oiling is necessary to maintain moisture and improve feel.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Compared to the J Mascis model, the Player II Jazzmaster is favored for better playability, especially for those who didn't prefer jumbo frets.

    Source
  • The Vintera I model, post neck angle and wiring adjustments, is praised for delivering a satisfying play experience akin to traditional Jazzmasters.

    Source
  • Some buyers prefer Squier models for their more authentic Jazzmaster features, including the presence of a rhythm circuit and traditional pickups.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Lollar 58 pickups are recommended for a dynamic sound, addressing brightness in stock pickups and enhancing fuzz and drive pedal response.

    Source
  • Owners modding the Classic Player JM suggest upgrading to an AVRI trem and bridge for improved performance.

    Source
  • Mustang-style bridges are recommended for improved comfort and tuning stability, with multiple users noting significant improvement over stock options.

At around the 0:25 mark of the video, Brandon shows off his Fender Player Series Jazzmaster in Sage Green Metallic finish:

Hey, my name is Brandon and I play in the band Nothing. You're about to look at my gear and thanks to some venue restraints, we're gonna be hopping around a little bit so saddle up. This is my Fender Jazzmaster. Fender actually just sent it to me in the mail right before this tour because I was using a Jazz for many years and it's broken and I'm too poor to fix it so they sent me a new one. As far as strings going, everything is still stock. I just got it so when I do have new strings, it's Ernie Ball 10 gauge. Settings are always a 10 and he is the courage to pick up mostly a lot of people use the little setting but I just think it sounds better. I get better feedback when it's on the bridge as well.

Jack was seen playing the Fender Jazzmaster at The Basement 2019, Nashville. It's a Player series due to the double uncovered cream humbuckers, black pickguard, and lack of a tremolo lock and rhythm circuit. The color appears to be butterscotch, though the lighting makes it hard to make out exactly.

In this home performance of Black Dog, hosted by Austin radio station KUTX 98.9, you can clearly see the waterslide decal on the headstock, identifying it as a Jazzmaster, and further, the lack of a rhythm circuit on the upper horn, the cream colored humbuckers, and the cream Strat-style knobs as opposed to the vintage witch-hat knobs that Jazzmasters are known for, can identify it as the Fender Player Jazzmaster in 3-Tone Sunburst. This can also be seen in many of their lo-fi lounge videos on their Youtube page, as well as used in their NPR Tiny Desk (Home) Concert.
