Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Fender Super Sonic 22 22W Tube Guitar Amp Head.

Use cases and applications

  • The amp excels in southern rock and country genres, handling everything from clean chicken picking to saturated Georgia Satellite-type tones.

    Source
  • Known for excellent rock and blues tones, it pairs well with active pickup guitars like the 90s Blade Strat BT Gary Levinson.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The JHS Little Black Box acts as a master volume in the effects loop, but is unnecessary for amps with existing master volume controls like the Super Sonic 22.

    Source
  • The Supersonic 22 is reportedly heavy, with users noting it feels heavier than a 4x10 Blues Deville despite being a 1x12, impacting portability.

    Source
  • The amp includes an effects loop and a footswitch, making it usable without additional pedals.

    Source

User experience

  • Some users find the Weber Mass attenuator affects tone and prefer alternatives like the Two Notes Torpedo Captor X for better tone preservation.

    Source
  • Some owners report that the Supersonic 22's channel switching can produce a noticeable clicking noise, reducing its usability in certain situations.

    Source
  • Owners have noted a lack of clean headroom beyond the 2-3 mark on the clean channel dial.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Fryette Power Station is praised for enhancing a 22W amp's performance to resemble a 50W amp, providing more volume and natural sound.

    Source
  • Compared to the Mesa Fillmore, the Supersonic 22 is similarly versatile but lacks the channel switching quietness some users prefer in the Mesa.

    Source
  • Compared to the Deluxe Reverb, it has higher gain potential while retaining a classic Fender sound.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • It's crucial to use proper speaker cables, not instrument cables, to prevent potential amp damage when connecting an attenuator.

    Source
  • Swapping the factory volume pot from 1M to 250K reduces noise by about 5 decibels.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners recommend the Tone King Ironman II Mini for attenuating without significant tone loss, enhancing volume flexibility without complex features.

    Source
  • A Weber speaker swap can soften the cleans, making the amp take pedals better and suit rhythm playing more effectively.

    Source
  • Owners have successfully replaced Illinois capacitors to fix electrical issues, costing roughly $100 in parts, significantly improving reliability.

    Source

Build quality

  • The amp's steel chassis can flex and cause tube rattle; adding tube bands can mitigate this issue.

    Source

Other

  • The amp requires the "internal" output jack to be plugged into any cab when using the "external" output jack.

Great amp for a decent price

After many months of deliberation, I finally settled for the Supersonic 22 head (as opposed to the combo amp). I run it through a custom-built 2x12 cabinet loaded with Eminence Legends and it sounds great. Amazing cleans and a strong gain channel, and solid EQ options as well.
