Description

Unveil the grandeur of the Gretsch White Falcon, an instrument that impeccably blends traditional craftsmanship and modern innovation. This guitar is a testament to the genius design of Jimmie Webster, providing a musical experience that perfectly captures the spirit of 1955.

The White Falcon is powered by TV Jones T-Armond single-coil pickups, a feature that delivers a crystal-clear tone that showcases the inherent hollowbody character of the guitar. Synchro-Sonic bridge not only gives a nod to its original-era authenticity but also ensures pinpoint intonation accuracy. The bridge locks into place with a thumbscrew, allowing tool-free adjustment.

The Gretsch White Falcon is the epitome of class and sophistication, sporting shining gold hardware, including the iconic Cadillac “G” tailpiece and gold jeweled arrow knobs. The gold sparkle bound neck, body, and F holes are complemented by a gleaming vintage white gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish, resulting in an instrument that is as visually stunning as it is sonically pleasing.

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Gretsch White Falcon.

Build quality

  • Post-2002 FMIC models feature 3-ply tops which are generally preferred over the stiffer 5-ply tops found in pre-FMIC models.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The White Falcon's Filtertron pickups provide a unique tonal chime and bass combination not matched by the blacktop Filtertrons found in Electromatics, according to some owners.

    Source
  • Richard Fortus Falcon models offer a choice between 24.6-inch and 25.5-inch scales, providing flexibility for players to match their preferred scale length.

    Source
  • Post-2002 models improved in wiring and pickup quality, addressing issues like crackly wiring found in earlier versions.

    Source
  • The White Falcon is often compared to the G5420, with the latter described as more practical for working musicians due to its cost-effectiveness and similar tonal capabilities.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The White Falcon's distinct resonance and unplugged playability make it suitable for home practice, especially for players who need to play quietly.

    Source
  • The White Falcon is not essential for achieving classic Gretsch tones; many iconic sounds come from other models in the lineup, demonstrating versatility in achieving desired tones.

    Source
  • The White Falcon's 25.5-inch scale and 17-inch body can be cumbersome for some players, making it potentially awkward for those with smaller frames.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners note the Falcon’s big body contributes to its full, blooming sound when amplified, but it may present challenges with feedback at high volumes.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The White Falcon's unplugged resonance is highly praised, making it an ideal couch guitar for quiet practice or songwriting without an amp.

    Source
  • The 1950s style White Falcon is thicker and single-cut, whereas the 1960s style is thinner and double-cut, affecting both playability and tone.

    Source
  • The 1990 pre-Fender models have a "mud switch" that is often considered too dark, making newer models more desirable for tonal clarity.

    Source
  • Neil Young’s Falcon is a stereo model, highlighting a unique variation within the Falcon lineup.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • It's noted that the gold plating on the hardware can wear off over time, which may affect resale value based on the guitar's condition.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Swapping in TV Jones pickups on a G5420 can closely mimic the White Falcon's sound, enhancing its tonal quality significantly.

    Source
  • Owners recommend changing the capacitors on the 1990 model's mud switch to 015 and 033 for more usable tone settings, reducing the "muddy" sound.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Japanese-made Gretsch guitars, like the White Falcon, command a premium but are noted for excellent build quality, though diminishing returns are recognized with higher pricing.

“Dave had never played a snare drum before,” states engineer Dodson. “He had a tom-tom in place of a snare. Kenny asked him to play snare drum, so that was all new to him. They really respected Kenny because he was very musical. He showed them the song and the arrangement. Matthew's guitar [a Gretsch White Falcon] sounded amazing. Leigh was a great bass player, and Annabella had a killer voice.”

“Rocco used to have a Melos tape echo with a little tape inside it that kept breaking, so he’d get a secondhand cassette from Oxfam, and take the tape from that, so there’d be ‘Zorba The Greek’ coming through like an old ghost. He’d churn out loads of caterwauling feedback with a lot of echo on a double cutaway White Falcon that he bought from Matthew Ashman from Bow Wow Wow, but it got stolen by a roadie, so then Billy Duffy sold him a single cutaway version. We used to call it ‘the wardrobe’ because it’s so enormous it’s like strapping a piece of Ikea furniture to your stomach.”

Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

A: My Gretsch White Falcon, a Roland RE-150, a Tascam 244, an SM58 and some kind of drum machine... maybe an old 808 or something. I'm going to assume all the necessary cables are included.

"It's a new White Falcon. I looked at vintage stuff, but Fender helps me with instruments, so this was a great deal for me. And it's hard to find exactly what you want in an old White Falcon. There's not that many available. So this one is an awesome instrument. It's got TV Jones pickups. It's got the Bigsby tailpiece. It's awesome."
