Owner Insights
We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Jen Jumbo Fuzz.
Features and functionality
-
The gate in the Jen Jumbo Fuzz is controlled by Q6 shorting the AC signal to ground, driven by current from the +9V rail through R29.
Source -
The Jen Jumbo Fuzz can be used interchangeably with other Big Muff style pedals, indicating its versatility and adaptability in various musical settings.
Source
Mods and upgrades
-
Replacing D5 and D6 with point-contact germanium diodes, such as 1N21, can lower the forward voltage and potentially improve gate functionality.
Source -
Adding a gain stage before the peak-detector Schottky diode-pair can increase signal strength, aiding in overcoming the higher voltage requirement of a silicon Q5.
Source
Comparisons
-
The original Jen Jumbo Fuzz used a germanium Q5 with a lower Vbe compared to silicon BJTs, affecting how the gate circuitry operates.
Source -
The Jen Jumbo Fuzz is similar to a slightly modified V1 Big Muff, with comparisons made to the Wren and Cuff Tri Pie '70, which offers a raspier tone but higher output volume.
Source
User experience
-
Substituting Schottky diodes for germanium in the circuit may alter the sound to be harsher, highlighting the sensitivity of the gate mechanism to component changes.

In thi video at 1:54 Danzig starts talking about the gear he used in Misfits. "I used a lot of old gear, old custom amps with big "15 and "18in speakers to get that big thick sound. Pedals too. I found the original dallas (something) jumbo fuzz that I used in The Misfits." Meanwhile while he's talking about the gear, pictures are being shown with the gear that he used in The Misfits days.

From SolidGoldFX:
Inspired by the JEN Jumbo fuzz, which is one of our personal favorite vintage fuzzes, the Imperial MKII’s four sliders, textured black paint and bold red graphics shows you can immediately tell that this pedal means business.
So, what is the JEN Jumbo Fuzz and what makes it so awesome? JEN Elettronica was an Italian manufacturer who made pedals for Vox, Dallas Arbiter and Sound City (among others), in addition to making equipment under their own brand. The Jumbo Fuzz was their spin on the venerable EHX Big Muff® that swapped the knobs out for sliders and added a nifty germanium noise gate. In terms of sound, the tuning of the Jumbo Fuzz lies somewhere in the Ram’s Head camp - not overly scooped or woofy, with a nice gain range - just a great sounding pedal!
While the Jumbo’s noise gate is a great feature and gives this BMP variant a unique attack with practically zero noise, vintage units vary greatly from one unit to another, with some gating too much and others not at all. Capturing the Jumbo Fuzz’s vibe and redesigning the gate was essential to our Imperial redesign.
