Critic Reviews

Korg Minikorg Family [Retrozone]

soundonsound.com

The Korg 770 is a charming throwback to the golden age of analog synthesis, with its baby Minimoog aesthetics and robust sound shaping capabilities. Praised for its warm, rounded tones, the 770 includes dual oscillators, unique filter arrangements, and impressive modulation options. However, its charm is somewhat overshadowed by the later MS-series, which offered more modern features. Despite lacking the aggressive bite of American synths, the Korg 770 remains a beloved piece for its controllability and distinctive sound palette. A nostalgic nod to Korg’s quirky design philosophy, it’s a synth that continues to capture hearts.

"I’ve still got my first synth, the Korg 770 which was a version of the 700 with a smaller keyboard, which was why I got it. I can still get sounds on it that I can’t get on anything else.”

Ian: "The keyboards have always been there, and we've still got the same set-up we always had — a Logan string machine, most primitive — "

Chris: " — steam-powered — "

Ian: " — and a Korg 770: we still use both live. On the new album we used DX7s, a Prophet, real piano..."

Chris: "We tried to keep it to the minimum. We used the DX7 mainly for the Hammond sound through a Leslie cabinet. They're mainly frills, though."
