Description

Introducing the Mesa/Boogie JP-2C, a product of the long-standing collaboration between Mesa/Boogie and Dream Theater's John Petrucci. This signature guitar amplifier head is not just a reissue of the iconic Mark IIC+, but an upgraded version that adapts to the evolving needs of modern musicians without compromising on its classic appeal. Stripped down to the bare essentials, the JP-2C delivers an aggressive, pure sound that has made the IIC+ legendary.

The three-channel head is designed for maximum efficiency and versatility. It ditches the concept of multiple voicing modes and dedicates each channel to circuit voicings of the Mark IIC+. Channel 1 is optimized for clean tones with maximum headroom, Channel 2 for aggressive, overdriven rhythm sounds, and Channel 3 for high-gain sustain and explosive attack.

The Shred Mode enhances the top-end harmonic layering of the original Lead Circuit. It adds an extra layer of upper harmonic content, making the high gain Modes even more aggressive and three-dimensional. This is particularly beneficial for high gain Crunch Rhythm sounds, adding a harmonic haze that rides atop the fat, grinding wall of gain.

Key Features:

  • Signature head of John Petrucci from Dream Theater
  • Next-generation version of the legendary Mark IIC+
  • Three dedicated channels for clean tones, overdriven rhythms, and high-gain lead
  • Shred Mode for enhancing the top-end harmonic layering
  • Highest headroom clean sound
  • Crunch rhythm with Lead Channel gain available
  • Boogie Lead Channel with access to even more saturation

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Mesa/Boogie JP-2C.

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners report EVM12L speakers provide a significant tonal improvement, enhancing clarity and size in a 2x12 cab.

    Source
  • Tech 21 MIDI Mongoose is a recommended footswitch for JP-2C, using a 9v battery due to the amp's lack of phantom power.

    Source
  • Using an Ox Box or Captor X with high-quality cab simulations can improve low-volume performance, providing a cranked cab sound without high volume.

    Source
  • Swapping the V1 tube for a 5751 can reduce gain intensity, making the amp more suited for rock tones instead of just metal.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners report using the clean channel and CH2 for crunch tones, reserving CH3 for lead sounds in live performances.

    Source
  • The lack of a global master volume requires individual channel adjustments, which some users find slightly inconvenient.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • JP-2C can be paired with a Headrush pedalboard for a robust live setup, sending signals directly to both the house and the amp.

    Source
  • Vertical 2x12 cabs might sound honky in the midrange compared to a 4x12, affecting the overall tonal richness at low volumes.

    Source
  • Mesa amps require higher volume levels to fully engage the power section and achieve optimal tone, which may lead to a boxy sound at bedroom volumes.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • JP-2C's MIDI compatibility allows control of channels and EQs, compensating for missing footswitch buttons like FX Loop and Solo.

    Source
  • The JP-2C allows slaving of the preamp to different power sections for versatile tonal manipulation, such as pairing with a 1987 Marshall Silver Jubilee.

    Source
  • The JP-2C's presence control significantly affects the low-end character, offering a deep punch when pushed in, similar to a Rectifier.

    Source
  • The JP-2C’s "shred" switch adds overdrive to either channel 2 or channels 2 and 3, but not simultaneously playing both channels.

    Source
  • The amp's built-in cab-clone is useful for silent practice with headphones, allowing users to play without disturbing others.

    Source

Comparisons

  • JP-2C lacks a 7-pin phantom powered jack, unlike some other amps, requiring external power for MIDI controllers.

    Source
  • The Mark IV is described as less raw and more compressed compared to the JP-2C, contrary to some expectations.

    Source
  • The Mark V offers more voicing options compared to the JP-2C's dual EQ and slightly cleaner clean channel.

Critic Reviews

Mesa Engineering JP-2C Head review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Mesa/Boogie JP-2C is a triumphant homage to John Petrucci, delivering an impressive tonal range and power that caters primarily to prog metal enthusiasts. Its modern take on the iconic Mark IIC+ is both devastating and versatile, making it suitable for various genres. However, its hefty price tag may deter some, and the absence of an FX loop on the footswitch is a notable oversight. Ultimately, this amp surpasses expectations, proving to be an exceptional choice for dedicated players willing to invest.
