CONS

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Nord Electro 4.

Features and functionality

  • Owners appreciate the ability to layer sounds and use bi-timbral support for versatile live setups, such as assigning organ and piano to different outputs.

    Source
  • The Electro 5 offers 4x more piano and sample memory, enabling use of XL piano samples, a significant upgrade for sample-heavy performances.

    Source
  • The addition of a screen in newer models is a noted improvement, though some users prefer waiting for further updates like new piano filters seen in the latest stage models.

    Source
  • The Electro 6D features real drawbars, whereas older models like the Electro 2 use digital buttons, which some find faster to use.

    Source
  • The Nord Electro 4D's drawbars are not motorized, but users find them easy to use and effective, especially for organ sounds and rotary speaker emulation.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Some users suggest alternatives like the Mojo for organ sounds and MODX or Montage for synth engines, indicating Nord excels in roadworthiness rather than being the best in any single category.

    Source
  • The Electro 5D has the same organ section as the 6D, offering a slightly improved organ spec over the 4D.

    Source

User experience

  • It’s been noted that the sound quality between the Electro 4 and 5 remains unchanged, which may influence those considering the upgrade based on tonal improvements.

    Source
  • Owners report that newer models don't enhance playability; the keys remain consistent across versions, such as from the Electro 2 to the 6D.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Electro 2 models are available for around $1000 and are considered a good deal for their sound and key action quality.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • For organ practice, a 73-key version is recommended over 61 keys for more keyboard space on splits.

    Source
  • Connecting a 61-key MIDI controller to the Electro 4D in split mode can simulate a double manual organ setup, providing a versatile and accessible solution for organ players.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners recommend using a Yamaha FC7 expression pedal for controlling organ volume, suggesting it offers digital control without quality loss.

    Source
  • A Dunlop Cry Baby or Vox Wah pedal is recommended for clavinet and electric piano sounds, offering more natural responsiveness than the onboard auto-wah.

Critic Reviews

Clavia Nord Electro 4

soundonsound.com

The Nord Electro 4 is a compelling choice for musicians seeking top-tier organ and piano emulations with its lightweight build and vibrant red design. It excels in delivering authentic Hammond, Farfisa, and Vox sounds, enriched by improved memory and USB MIDI support. However, its limitations, such as a lack of aftertouch, pitch-bend, and limited RAM in the 4D model, might deter some. The primitive screen and monotimbrality could frustrate users accustomed to more advanced interfaces. Despite these drawbacks, the Electro 4's musicality and emotional appeal make it a leader in its category.

Perfect live session keyboard

Tonewheel organ emulation is very close to the real Hammond organ, acoustic pianos are just perfect, then you have the Sample library where you can upload your OWN sounds; all is enhanced by an effect section made very well.
