Yamaha: 02R96 Digital Mixing Console | Tape Op Magazine | Longform candid interviews with music producers and audio engineers covering mixing, mastering, recording and music production.

tapeop.com

The Yamaha 02R96 Digital Mixing Console is lauded for its robust functionality and significant improvements over its predecessor, the original 02R. With 24-bit, 96 kHz capabilities, 32-bit internal processing, and improved mic preamps, it's a powerful tool for modern studios. The console offers seamless integration with Pro Tools and Nuendo, enhanced by intuitive automation and touch-sensitive faders. However, some minor inconveniences, like the lack of a mic/line switch and buried mono switch, detract slightly. Overall, with its impressive features and competitive pricing, the 02R96 is a standout choice for serious project studios and professional environments alike.

With a more intuitive user interface and comprehensive control surface, this console addresses previous criticisms while delivering advanced features like touch-sensitive faders and versatile DAW integration. However, some drawbacks include fan noise, reliance on external software, and compatibility issues with older YGDAI cards. Amazing Desk

While the O2R96 was updated some while ago I had bought this after using an old O2R for a number of years. The difference was incredible. I have used this O2R96 to record since about 2006 and still use it today. It's one thing using software and 'controllers' in a studio, but there is NOTHING like using a real and decent digital mixer. As the name implies the desk can record at (KHz if you need that, but to be honest 44 is fine and I've never had any complaints.

The mixer does not come originally with I/O boards fitted and those can be expensive - even now! As well as a couple of Lightpipe I/O in there I also have a Dante I/O board that is used with RJ45 and any computer network. Dante have a driver for the PC that costs just $30 and you will be in business fast.

The preamps are incredibly quiet, the routing is basically anything I or O to anywhere else. There are on board effects which work fine but of course lots of auxiliaries so you can add outboard. 8 Bus desk of the highest order.

I won't be selling this any time soon.... a 10/10 rating is the only thing I could ever say about it.

I use mone with an old Mackie SDR hard disk recorder (also 44khz or 96 if you push it) and it has never missed a beat.

Recommended.
