Gear Review: Orangewood Oliver Mahogany | Guitar World

guitarworld.com

The Orangewood Oliver Mahogany Acoustic is a solid entry-level guitar that excels with its flawless fretwork and warm, balanced tone. At a price point of $195, it delivers impressive sound quality with a rich midrange, though it can get a bit boomy for heavy strumming. While the thin satin finish may scratch easily, it contributes to the guitar's comfortable feel. However, the lack of onboard electronics may deter some players looking for versatility. Overall, it's a well-crafted instrument that stands out in its price range, making it a smart choice for budding musicians.

Good bang for the buck, but it takes a couple months to really "open up"

I purchased this guitar in 2019, right after the internet craze over OrangeWood. Unfortunately, the sound right out of the box was thin, tinny, and nothing like the stereotypical mahogany sound. Despite all of this, I decided to keep it and stick it out.

Two years later, I pick up the guitar all of the time. The wood has really opened up in the past year, and the warmth has flooded in. Elixir bronze 13s certainly help (considering it came with crappy Ernie Ball Earthwoods). The matte finish is odd: anywhere it takes frequent contact becomes polished; (which, for me, is right below the soundhole and behind the neck). It really just looks oily and greasy.

Additionally, you have to play this guitar as it is meant to be played. You can't go all "Mumford and Sons" on it with a heavy pick. It is a 000, mahogany guitar. Fingerpicking, light strumming, and lots of reverb sound excellent on this instrument. Just don't expect it to be a jack-of-all-trades workhorse.

Otherwise, for $175 (after using common coupons), you really can't go wrong. Just give it time.
