The Dark Horse Fuzz by Phonograph
The Phonograph Dark Horse fuzz is a hand-built guitar and bass fuzz pedal modeled after the legendary Univox Super-Fuzz octave-fuzz circuit from the late 1960s and early ’70s.
It delivers a raw, aggressive, and octave-rich fuzz tone that ranges from vintage garage grit to wild, plosive sounds with plenty of harmonic complexity. Internally it uses NOS Japanese transistors and vintage-style germanium diodes to recreate the classic fuzz character with pronounced upper octave texture. The pedal includes simple controls typically Level, Tone (two-position switch), and Fuzz and under-housing DIP switches for fine-tuning the octave response. It’s built with true bypass switching and a standard Boss-style 9 V DC input for compatibility with common power supplies.
The Dark Horse’s robust enclosure and bright LED make it easy to use on pedalboards, while its unique tonal character makes it appealing to players seeking vintage fuzz with a modern DIY twist.
Although not widely mass-produced, it has a cult following among players looking for authentic Super-Fuzz-style sounds.
Overall, this pedal captures the aggressive, mid-scooped sonic signature that made the Univox design influential in rock history.
