Description

Unleash a world of sonic destruction with the EarthQuaker Devices Erupter, a fuzz effects pedal that combines simplicity with a powerful sound. Designed specifically for guitarists seeking an explosive, vintage fuzz tone, the Erupter is the culmination of over two years of meticulous experimentation and tweaking. It promises a unique sonic experience by offering a perfectly biased, all-analog, one-knob fuzz. With just a single control labeled "Bias," you can manipulate the fuzz character, ranging from a smooth, creamy fuzz to a more aggressive, sputtery sound.

The Erupter stands out with its all-analog circuitry, providing a warm, organic tone that digital pedals often struggle to replicate. Its true bypass design ensures your signal remains uncolored when the pedal is disengaged, maintaining the integrity of your guitar’s natural sound. This pedal caters to both vintage tone enthusiasts and modern sound explorers, offering a wide spectrum of fuzz tones that are equally at home in classic rock and contemporary experimental genres.

Built to withstand the rigors of the road, the Erupter features a rugged enclosure with top-mounted jacks for a compact pedalboard footprint. This makes it a perfect addition to any setup, whether you're gigging or recording in the studio.

Key Features:

  • Single "Bias" control for dynamic fuzz character adjustments
  • All-analog circuitry for warm, authentic sound
  • True bypass design to preserve guitar signal integrity
  • Compact, road-ready enclosure with top-mounted jacks
  • Suitable for a wide range of musical styles from classic rock to experimental genres

PROS

  • Simple one-knob operation offers ease of use

  • Vintage sounding fuzz adaptable to various tunings and instruments

  • Internal trim pots allow for nuanced tone shaping

  • Capable of producing both subtle overdrive/fuzz and intense, saturated fuzz tones

  • Works well as a standalone pedal for a significant tone boost

CONS

  • Lacks output volume control, making live band use challenging

  • High output can be difficult to integrate with other pedals

  • Adjusting internal trim pots for different setups is inconvenient

  • Can produce undesirably harsh sounds at certain settings

  • Noticeably noisy, potentially problematic for some setups

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about EarthQuaker Devices Erupter.

Features and functionality

  • The Erupter's volume knob doubles as a gain adjuster, allowing for a sparkling clean tone with the volume rolled back significantly.

    Source
  • The Erupter lacks a volume control, causing a significant volume jump when engaged, especially noticeable with amps like the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners highlight the Erupter's ability to clean up exceptionally well with the guitar's volume knob, a trait not commonly found in other silicon fuzz pedals.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Erupter is preferred over the JHS Smiley for being less raspy and over the Silicon Mini for being less bright.

    Source
  • Owners consider switching to pedals like the Fuzz Factory or DBA Fuzz War for similar tones but with adjustable volume options.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • When paired with an amp set to a light crunch, the Erupter provides a noticeable volume lift without excessive increase, maintaining a balanced fuzziness.

    Source
  • The Erupter is noted for not pairing well with other drive pedals, yet excels in standalone fuzz performance, fulfilling its intended purpose perfectly.

    Source
  • The Erupter can be too loud for home use without additional volume control or modifications, making it challenging for bedroom-level playing.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Some owners consider adding a volume pot mod to the Erupter, although it's an aftermarket modification that might alter the original spitting fuzz tone.

    Source
  • A volume mod for the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe is suggested to better manage the Erupter’s volume jump without altering the pedal itself.

One Knob Fizz

What can I say? It has One Knob. One Knob.

Turn it up a little and it sounds amazing, turn it up a lot and it sounds also amazing. One might say it erupts with fuzzy fizzy juice. I for sure would buy this pedal again.

Buy them as a gift for all your firiends, that's what I did. Well one friend, but still. I would definitely buy it as a gift for another friend.

I have never heard anything by Earthquaker Devices that I didn't love.

vismundcygnus

needs an output volume knob

great sounds on this pedal. but why doesnt i have an output volume? the bias knob changes the output level dramatically, and so this pedal is basically unusable in a band context, because when you turn it on you'll either be way too loud or way too quiet. it would be a good pedal for recording or bedroom guitarists though.

blondguru

I came across this a while back, and that volume situation was tricky. However, I didn't notice too much of the tone killed by simply rolling off some of the volume on the guitar. Try that out if you haven't already!

blondguru

I know it's not ideal, but modding is always an option! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74gzOtBguls

jimmarchi1

they're encouraging you to clip the 1ststage of your amp to add to the fuzziness, basically forcing you to do it.

The solo on that is an EarthQuaker Devices Erupter going through a Vox AC15 C1. I didn’t have anything written for that when we got to the studio and our label came down and were in the control room while we were playing it. I played that solo on the third take using that sound for a laugh with no reverb, it sticks out like a sore thumb and it just came out really well. The rest of the track is quite roomy, so it really sticks out!
