Mods and upgrades
-
Increasing the value of R21 or adding a ~50k trimpot allows for more repeats and enables self-oscillation.
Source -
Its faders and design make it a popular choice for modding and circuit bending enthusiasts.
Source -
Adding an A100k pot after desoldering R52 and R53 adjusts output volume, though this disables the line output.
Source -
Replacing the MN3207 with a CoolAudio V3208 can double delay time to 200ms, improving sound quality but possibly increasing noise.
Source -
A circuit bending mod with a 500k pot can extend delay time, causing self-oscillation and warped sounds.
Source -
Users suggest adding a SPDT toggle switch for bypass functionality, though the full circuit board complicates this.

Use cases and applications
-
Often found more useful for percussion and drum machines due to its unique sound characteristics.
Source -
Some owners have successfully used it to overdrive preamps, similar to techniques used by The Beatles and Thom Yorke.
Source -
Works well with a 60s EV mic into a modded Fender Frontman, creating a "crappy in a fun way" sound.
Source -
Functions more as a delay than a reverb, with self-oscillation capabilities when used with a Tascam four-track.

It doesn't do much, but what it does is unique
Weird little artifact of it's time, the sort of thing you might expect to find on Wish these days. First of all, there's no way you can honestly call it a "reverb". It's a BBD delay that doesn't pack a lot of milliseconds in there, but...it's such a unique sound that I haven't heard anything else quite like it. It sounds great with my MG-1, so hurray for Radio Shack. 1 star for flexibility, 5 stars for sounding like someone tried to reverse-engineer a reverb pedal and had no clue how it was done but came up with something awesome anyway.
Preferred Settings + Usage:
I mean, to get the biggest effects from it, bump everything all the way to the top. I would NEVER suggest that you run the output back in through the RCA jack but if you do that, you might get some really interesting sounds.

Doom machine hiding in plain sight
If you're looking for a reverb, this isn't it. The intended effect is more of a delay than a reverb, and it does the job well enough. However, the thing I find to be the most fun with this is the "microphone" (aka volume) dial. Once you turn it up about a third of the way, you start to get this weird, hairy distorted signal that actually ends up being a very cool fuzz that doesn't really sound like anything else. Very cool sound both on its own and stacked with other dirt pedals.
Preferred Settings + Usage:
As first pedal in the chain:
Microphone (vol): 5 Delay: 5.5 Repeat: 3 Depth: 4.5

its so bad its good
I have one of these bought in the 90s and its like a bathtub reverb with a scattered delay effect.... -10dbv standard on the rcas I think, just misuse it and interesting things occur... I would use this more for its bizzare sounds if not for the irritating interfacing just XLR and RCA and non rack format.... the sliders are very satisfying I guess
so bad its good, like backaroo bonzai.... is it 1 star or 5 stars?
Preferred Settings + Usage:
crank everything

Fun
Effect is limited and lo-fi, but really quite fun and interesting. Distortion and Reverb.

how are you the first person here to review the legendary Radio Shack reverb? Amazing.
Artist usage

Sterenberg recently added this pedal to his live setup. He does not use it as a reverb, but rather more of a fuzz. From his website:
"I can now run pedals that I normally wouldn’t be able to, including the Realistic Electronic Reverb unit on the far left (it’s actually a quick analog delay that I’m using as more of a blown-out fuzz). This pedal has no footswitch on its own, so before I could only use it for recording purposes (for an example you can hear an overdub at time 1:24 on the song “All Our Bruised Bodies and the Whole Heart Shrinks“)."
In this video you can clearly see it in the upper right corner. Its visible the whole time.
According to the "equipment list" found on Church Studios, owned by Epworth, one of the things listed is Realistic Electronic Reverb.
In this image from the "Pictures" section of CFTPA website (http://www.cftpa.org/pictures.htm) you can see the Realistic Electronic Reverb on top of the suitcase.
