Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Taylor T5.

Use cases and applications

  • The Taylor T5Z is not much louder than an unplugged solid body electric, making it less suitable for unamplified performances.

    Source
  • StringJoy FoxWoods are preferred for practice sessions due to their longevity, while D'Addario Nickel Bronze strings are favored for live performances.

    Source
  • The T5-C1's setup, designed without a piezo sensor, may not achieve a convincing acoustic sound, appealing more to players seeking electric tones.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Fender Acoustasonic series is noted for being louder and more responsive unplugged than the T5Z, with improved sound when amplified.

    Source
  • The Michael Kelly Hybrid is suggested as a cost-effective alternative, with claims of a better neck and pickups compared to the Taylor T5.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Lower vintage output allows the T5Z to handle a range from acoustic to thrash metal, though EQ adjustments are necessary for optimal sound.

    Source
  • Owners mention a small white switch on the pickup PCB board, indicating possible customization or adjustment options.

    Source
  • The 2006 T5-C1 Custom model is unique with two visible stacked humbuckers, lacking the typical piezoelectric body sensor for a more electric tone.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • F-hole covers from Taylor and adding pillow filling inside have been used to achieve a more solid tone and reduce feedback.

    Source
  • Owners suggest experimenting with higher nickel content strings to improve resonance with pickups, potentially altering the thin, metallic tone noted by some users.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • GHS White Bronze strings are recommended for balancing acoustic and electric tones, solving the issue of poor sound with traditional string choices.

    Source

User experience

  • Ernie Ball Papa Hets strings are praised for staying in tune on a maple top T5, offering a reliable alternative to the stock Elixirs.

Incredibly versatile guitar

The amazing ability to go from clear, clean acoustic to blazing rock overdriven sounds is almost mind boggling. Add to the stellar electronics a smooth, fast playing neck, thin profile and great look, and this guitar gets a lot of admirers. If mostly used for its acoustic settings, a light set of acoustic strings can be used. I do a lot of electric playing, so I use a light gauge electric set. The 5 way selector switch allows the guitar to range from acoustic to almost any electric sound (strat, Les Paul, tele, and more). It's the ONE guitar I've held onto while selling and buying many others.
