"Silverstein also uses a TC Electronic M5000 reverb — found next to the second Showconsole in the area affectionately referred to as 'Monitor World' — on Mayer's vocals. In fact, the M5000 is about the only piece of outboard gear Silverstein uses, due to the Showconsole's array of channel dynamics. 'In my opinion, if you keep it simple, you're going to get better results,' Silverstein says. “There's less room for error and you're going to get a more natural tone.'"

"My existing effects all have digital inputs and outputs because the studio is all-digital, other than a few front-end devices. One of the units is a TC M5000, which gives me reverb and pitch change, and then there's an Eventide 4000 Harmonizer which just sounds right, as well as being easy to use. Other than that, there are just one or two delays used for echo, flanging and that kind of thing and of course, a Lexicon reverb."

"For effects, Pearson uses a variety of multi-effects units to help create different sonic textures. 'I have a TC M5000 multi-effects unit, a Lexicon 480L reverb, a [Yamaha] SPX-990 multi-effects, a PCM 42 delay and an Eventide H3000 Harmonizer. On Alanis' CDs, she overdubs her voice a lot to create harmonies and textures, so I use a variety of delays and the harmonizer to create different textures between the verses and the chorus. But [I] keep it sounding natural to imply the effect that she uses on the CDs."

I still really love the TCs [M5000 and 2290]. You can get really amazing digital feedbacks out of those. It's so astonishing because nobody is really aware that you can get something like that out of that equipment. It goes down to even Alesis [Quadraverb II and Midiverb]. Sometimes I'm using a spring system from Tapco [4400]. It's a stereo system and it uses different types of springs so the reflections are different.

"It was all live, although I did actually put some sampled instruments into a couple of tracks, but everything is played because that's how those albums are made. What was crucial in doing the jazz album approach was a lot of time to mix it and getting the sounds absolutely right. The idea was to make it feel very dynamic and to get an interesting sound on Maria's [singer Maria Pia De Vito] voice. We used loads of different reverb settings from the [TC Electronic] M5000, trying to get exactly the right sound. I didn't want it to sound as if it was a cheap day out."
