Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Technics SL-1210MK2.

Build quality

  • Owners praise the SL-1210MK2 for its heavy-duty construction and precise sound quality, even outperforming previous turntables with the same cartridge.

    Source
  • Some users note the MK2's tonearm is sturdier and less "plastic-y" than the MK7's, contributing to its more robust feel.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • A Reloop dust cover can fit the SL-1210MK2, but requires using its own hinges and screws due to size differences.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners report the SL-1210MK2 as a lifetime investment, with some units still performing well after 25 years.

    Source
  • Long-term users note that the SL-1210MK2 maintains stability and precision even after decades of use, making it a preferred choice for scratching and mixing.

    Source
  • Some owners prefer the MK7 for its wider pitch range and responsiveness, especially when mixing diverse genres like techno and drum 'n' bass.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The SL-1210MK2's main difference from the SL-1200 is its black color, which some users prefer over silver.

    Source
  • Many owners find the Technics SL-1210MK2 superior in build quality and stability compared to the newer MK7, which is lighter and less suitable for loud settings.

    Source
  • Reloop RP-7000MK2 and PLX-1000 are considered decent alternatives, but some users note pitch instability in the Reloops over time, affecting long blends.

    Source
  • PLX-1000's motor and pitch control feel stronger and more precise than the MK7, with a metal build and sturdy tonearm enhancing its appeal over the MK7.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The MK2-MK5 models are praised for their analog pitch control, which several users prefer over the digital pitch control of newer models like the MK7.

    Source
  • The MK2's pitch fader has a mechanical notch at 0, which can develop a "dead zone" over time, impacting precision.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • A user experienced RCA cable wear over time on the SL-1210MK2; replaceable cables in newer models like the MK7 resolve this issue.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Owners of the SL-1210MK2 report reliable performance in both home and professional settings, with emphasis on its durability and precision for DJing.

    Source
  • MK7s require substantial isolation, such as cinder blocks and foam pads, in high-volume environments to prevent feedback and resonance issues.

    Source

Other

  • The MK7's detachable RCA leads offer convenience over the MK2's integrated cables, simplifying repairs and replacements.

Technics SL-1210 Mk2 review | Stuff

stuff.tv

The Technics SL-1210MK2 is hailed as the gold standard for DJ turntables, revered for its robust build, reliable direct-drive motor, and precise pitch control. While it lacks modern features like reverse mode and USB output, its dependability and tactile pleasure make it a timeless choice for DJs. Its only minor flaw is the center detent on the fader, which can hinder fine adjustments. Overall, it's the epitome of durability and function, earning a glowing 5/5.

The best of the best.

Bought mine for 500 GBP for the pair in brand new condition with road cases and perfectly intact lids in 2007 while in London for a year. Brought them back on the plane and kept them in mind condition while still having them set up. Perfect compliment to my SL-1200 MKII Silver pair which are also the best of the best, but have been through a few battles and trips too and from hell and gone. Still rock solid. You can't beat these decks.

blackfan

You know the deal.

Having been DJing since the late 80’s not having pair of these would be like missing a limb. MK2’s are my preferred, with upgraded leads.

simfonik

Top quality and built to last.

If you're a vinyl DJ, the SL-1200/1210 is a must. I've owned 4 in the past 24 years and each one is still working like new.

brendan_ihmig

There are reasons why some gear are seen as the industry standard, this so happens to be one of those!

novelstoic

@simfonik I'm ashamed to say that, currently, I do not have a record player of any kind or quality. My last one took a crap on me (because it was crap to start with) and I haven't replaced it. Really, just because I'm not a vinyl DJ or anything and in a desperate move, sold almost all my vinyl last year :tear:

artemios

classic of best

LP is last hq-item. The deck design was primarily to create the best audio production for listening, but the aim to get very solid control over wow and flutter, in addition to maximum prevention of resonance from the sound produced, meant it became the primary turntable for installation into nightclubs and other venues where the sound level precluded the use of other turntables with similar capabilities.

Iconic

Learned how to DJ on 2 of these in 1997-1998. Still have 2 of them setup in my studio now. Hardly ever touch them anymore to be honest, but they still work, sound and look great :) Gotta love vinyl!

Technics 1210's last forever. I bought my first set in 1992, sold them to a friend in 1995 and they're still going strong. The new set I bought in 1995 haven't skipped a beat.

spazialex

Dreams Come True

This is the turntable all DJs chase after. It took me 15 years to finally get my hands on one and now I have it as well as a 1200 MK2. The next upgrade is a matched set of MK5s or the new Pioneer turntables that are to take their place.

the quest for a legendary turntable

Before having this turntable, I searched everywhere to find it ! The technics mk2 is a legend !

A timeless classic that remains indispensable

I will never get rid of my decks even though I use CDJs for my live gigs now.

While there is no text visible in the photo on either of the two turntables (although in some other photos from alternate angles the Technics logo can just barely be made out from the back), It can be confidently assumed that these are 1200/1210 MK2s due to that particular model being the only one readily available in matte black in Europe at that time.
