This Watkins Westminster was produced sometime in the early-1960s. This amp rates at about 14 watts and is one of those secret-weapon amps in studios and player collections. Warm, and rich overdrive at low volumes that are perfect for recording applications — set the overdrive pedals aside and use the real thing. It’s pretty worn, but it’s over 50 years old so that’s to be expected. Note that the control panel has sunk in a little bit.
In the early Quarrymen days, whilst preforming in the Casbah Coffee Club, the Quarrymen used a Watkins Westminster amplifier. The amplifier belonged to Ken Brown.
This interview was done in Adrian's private studio. The photos show most of his instruments and gear, including the Watkins Amp.
“I’ve had that a long time, and it’s nearly my number one studio amp," says Adrian of one of his favourite small amps. "I think it’s like a ’59 model or early ’60 or something like that. It’s similar to Vox circuitry, I think, and it sounds absolutely amazing. That’s a real favourite, and I record with it a lot.”
