Description

The perfect companion now comes in a smaller package - meet Sidekick JR!

Taking inspiration from the senior unit we released back in 2019, our goal was to create a compact pedal that would combine the most widely used time-based effects and would fit into any gear setup lurking for 80s tones and beyond. From the jangly, ambient and shimmering sounds of New Wave, Shoegaze and Synth Pop to the soaking wet tones of Hair / Glam Metal. The new Sidekick JR features even more sounds / algorithm selections compared to the senior unit.

Modulation effect / algorithms were inspired by classic 80s stompboxes. “Ensemble” algorithm resembles warm and mild modulated chorus sounds while the “dimension” algorithm will enhance the 3D image of your sound but without the typical chorus warble. The “flanger” algorithm was inspired by a classic flanger pedal being set up as a slow chorus with mild feedback added for a more metallic sound.

Echo / delay section offers the sweet but vibrant sound of a tape echo with a freshly installed tape running through a colourful preamp or the pristine repeats of an 80s digital delay rack unit.

Reverb section was inspired by definitive examples of 80s reverb rack units and sounds and offers two algorithm banks. Bank A features all time classic reverbs sounds like “plate”, “spring” and “hall” while Bank B features signature 80s reverb sounds like “gated”, “exciter” (our trademark big-hall reverb algorithm with almost infinite reflections and decay) and octave up “shimmer”.

In order to provide full flexibility in the smallest enclosure possible we had to come up with a smart switching setup. As per standard onboard function, the delay and reverb effect sections of Sidekick JR operate independently from each other and the modulation is assignable to any of these sections. With the addition of the XT footswitch (sold separately) the modulation section becomes totally independent and can be switched on/off (true bypass) on its own.

Sidekick JR also features a power-up bypass/engage pre-set function for the onboard footswitches. That way you can select which state your pedal will go to when you plug the power supply. This function comes in especially handy to people that use remote pedal switchers / loopers as they only set the power-up state of the pedal once and then operate from the controller.

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Crazy Tube Circuits Sidekick JR.

Features and functionality

  • The Sidekick Jr.'s shimmer and delay are well-regarded, but some users desire a tone control to manage brightness, especially with heavier drive sounds.

    Source
  • The modulation speed set above 1/3rd helps manage brightness, particularly in delay modes.

    Source
  • Tape mode on the delay is preferred for warmer tones, while digital mode can sound overly bright.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Users transitioning from Keeley Caverns and Source Audio Collider find the Sidekick Jr.'s reverb algorithms, particularly Exciter, to be a strong alternative.

    Source
  • The Sidekick Jr. offers versatility but may not match the exact sounds of dedicated pedals like the BF-3 or Dimension C for recordings.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • An EQ placed after the reverb in the signal chain is recommended to manage treble roll-off for a more balanced sound profile.

    Source

User experience

  • Despite its positive attributes, the need for an external extension switch for dual functions is seen as a downside compared to pedals with integrated soft switch features.

    Source
  • Using the guitar's tone control can help reduce high-end brightness, but there's a fine line before the sound becomes muddy.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The pedal's versatility makes it suitable for those exploring diverse soundscapes, but dedicated effects might be better for specific tonal goals.

Crazy Tube Circuits Sidekick Jr modulation, delay and reverb pedal review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Crazy Tube Circuits Sidekick JR is a compact powerhouse, offering lush reverb and modulation sounds that truly shine. It’s user-friendly and perfect for musicians looking to streamline their pedalboard. However, its delay effects are a letdown, lacking distinct character and requiring a separate purchase for full modulation control. While it excels in many areas, the absence of stereo outputs may deter some. Overall, it's a solid choice for those seeking quality in a compact format, though it might not satisfy delay enthusiasts.

Crazy Tube Circuits Sidekick Jr review – a compact ambient tool

guitar.com

The Crazy Tube Circuits Sidekick Jr offers an impressive array of ambient sounds in a compact design, making it a potential favorite for minimalist pedalboards. Its reverb options are particularly noteworthy, delivering rich, studio-quality tones. However, it falls short with its limited delay sounds and the need for an optional footswitch, which adds both cost and complexity. While the user interface is straightforward and intuitive, the absence of individual modulation controls may frustrate some users. Overall, it's a solid choice for beginners exploring soundscaping but leaves advanced users wanting more depth.
