Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Electro-Harmonix Bass Micro Synth XO.

Features and functionality

  • The octave up feature is always distorted due to its analog nature, providing a unique but potentially limiting sound.

    Source
  • The Micro Synth uses the guitar's pitch to control an internal signal generator, creating synth sounds independent of the guitar's direct output.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Users suggest modding the pedal for expression control to enable real-time filter adjustments, though it significantly increases the cost.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Ideal for EDM and dance pop sounds, especially when paired with a Source Audio Hot Hand for enhanced control.

    Source
  • It’s suggested to avoid using a wah pedal simultaneously with the Micro Synth to prevent tracking issues and maintain desired sound quality.

    Source
  • A clean boost before the Micro Synth can aid in achieving a more consistent lead tone, especially when alternating between lead and rhythm in a band setting.

    Source

User experience

  • Analog setup requires dialing in tones manually, which can be challenging if unfamiliar with 80s-style synths.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Tracks more reliably and offers more usable sounds than the Boss SYB-5 according to users who have used both.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Owners recommend placing the Micro Synth at the front of the signal chain for optimal tracking, as effects before it can disrupt signal processing.

    Source
  • Using a compressor before the Micro Synth can limit its envelope response, as it would only follow a single envelope pattern.

Gotta love the analogue

Beautiful pedal, with endless possibilities. I have spent hours just playing around with it, and I keep finding new sounds and nuances. It is 100% analogue, and just easy to get to know. With the pedal comes a book with "presets", settings for specific sounds. There are also some blank templates where you can draw in your own preferences.

Awsome pedal!

I have the old one and it's great. I never try this version.

Briggs took a more svelte approach for his pedalboard on the Coma Ecliptic tour. His stomp station includes a Boss TU-2 tuner, a Wamper Faux Tape Echo (used for a constant warbling tone), an Electro-Harmonix Bass Micro Synth (ideal for “Tom Sawyer”-ish bass-synth washiness), a Boss DD-3 Digital Delay, Boss TR-2 Tremolo, Boss PS-3 Digital Pitch Shifter/Delay (Briggs’ favorite pedal, which he currently uses as a chorus), and a Darkglass Electronics Duality Fuzz (which replaced a Keeley-modded Ibanez Tube Screamer because the Duality has a mix knob that allows Briggs to keep a more natural tone of low-end fury)
