Description

The Longsword by Electronic Audio Experiments The Longsword is yet another contender in the endless void of op-amp based drive pedals—familiar but with some novel twists. Cascaded gain stages allow for the full range from clean boost to massive distortion, all without sacrificing tonal flexibility. The equalizer combines bass and treble shelving filters with an active, frequency-selectable midrange boost/cut control. This lets the user sculpt a diverse array of tones and carve out a niche in even the most dense of mixes. The Longsword has a broad frequency response which makes it work equally well with guitar, baritone, and bass.

Controls

Level: output volume

Drive: go from light grit to heavy overdrive

Low/High: James/Baxandall tone stack (shelving filters)

Mid: active midrange boost/cut

Shift: selects frequency controlled by Mid pot

Diode: selects between clipping diodes, to alter dynamics and headroom

Up: MOSFET clipping, medium compression

Center: no diodes, minimal compression

Down: Silicon diode clipping, maximum compression

Boost (Footswitch): engages a front end mid boost

Boost (Knob): adds up to 20dB of gain when the Boost is engaged

Changelog

V4.5 (current as of January 2021) - New mechanical format (changed enclosure shape, knob spacing, jacks, etc) - Added power supply over-voltage shutdown circuit and ESD protection - Increased Low/High control crossover frequency by approximately 500Hz to reduce interactivity of High and Mid controls

V4 - New 6-knob layout - Surface mount PCB - Boost knob moved to exterior - Soft-touch relay bypass switching

V3 - Added 9V to 18V (+/-9V bipolar) power supply for increased headroom - Gain 1/2 setting replaced with Boost mode

V2.1 - Eliminated Range toggle, fixed at optimal intermediate setting

V2 - Added diode clipping switch - Added “Gain 1/2” switch to access 2nd preset, accessible via internal trimpot

V1 - Initial release

Electrical Specifications:

Bypass: Relay switching with true bypass Input impedance @ 1 Khz: 500kΩ Output impedance @ 1 Khz: 1kΩ Power: 9V DC, 2.1 mm center negative barrel. The current draw is 75 mA. We recommend a regulated, isolated power supply rated for 100 mA minimum. The PSU input is protected against reverse polarity and over-voltage up to 24V. Our pedals do not accept batteries.

Electronic Audio Experiments Longsword Drive | Delicious Audio

delicious-audio.com

The Electronic Audio Experiments Longsword Drive shines with its versatile op-amp based design, offering everything from clean boosts to heavy distortion. Its robust equalizer with a semi-parametric midrange control allows players to easily carve out distinct tones for guitar, baritone, or bass. The additional boost circuit is a handy feature for dynamic performance shifts. While it competes in a crowded market of drive pedals, its innovative approach to gain stages makes it a standout. However, some may find the array of controls overwhelming, especially for those seeking simplicity. Overall, it's a powerful and flexible tool for tone enthusiasts who appreciate depth in their pedalboard.

I will never stop praising this pedal.

I have a Pedaltrain Nano Max where all the pedals are carefully selected to play everything from Elliott Smith to Johnny Cash to Rolling Stones to Black Sabbat to Kyuss to My Bloody Valentine to Darkthrone - this pedal absolutely fits that gig.

It does everything from a slight volume boost/EQ to overdrive to distortion to fuzz. Three clipping modes, EQs built in boost and shitloads of dB if you need it. Would recommend checking out the manual so you can unlock the full potential of this pedal, as the EQ works differently than expected. This has the overdrive sound of my band and all the bands I like to listen to - again, it can do anything. So for my usecase it's perfect. One of the funniest things to do with this is to max out volume, drive, and boost, and drive that into another overdrive pedal (like a Soul Food or DS-1) to absolutely overload it and create a weird glitchy 8-bit sounding fuzz. No overdrive can survive the power of the EAE Longsword being flodded into it.

Soft switches and top mounted jacks on the newest versions are just the cherries on top.

Love it!

This distortion has become an important element of my tone. I searched long and far but when I first heard someone use this in a demo, I knew it was the one. Very customizable. It took sometime playing with it but now that it’s dialed in, it sounds amazing. If you don’t mind messing with it, you can find a sound you love.
