Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Ensoniq TS-10.

Software and compatibility

  • The TS-10's Ensoniq floppy format cannot be read on USB floppy drives; a Gotek USB floppy emulator or Greaseweazle is recommended for loading samples.

    Source

User experience

  • MIDI syncing with external gear can be a workaround if the keyboard is non-functional but the internal electronics are intact.

    Source
  • Programming complexity is high, with a steep learning curve and numerous parameters to navigate.

    Source
  • The synth is noted for its substantial size and weight, which can impact portability and setup logistics.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Unless offered at a very low price, purchasing a TS-10 with visible exterior damage and potential internal issues is considered risky due to repair challenges.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The TS-10's display is a proprietary neon type, which is non-replaceable if it fails.

    Source
  • Polyphonic aftertouch keyboard is highlighted as a standout feature, enhancing expressive playing capabilities.

    Source
  • The effects processing is praised, featuring Ensoniq DP/4 quality, enhancing sound richness.

    Source
  • Non-resonant filters function more like equalizers, limiting analog-style sound creation.

    Source
  • The TS-10 allows for user-loaded wavetables, which is rare and offers extensive sound design possibilities.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Common issues include failure of the keybed calibration routine on boot, which throws an error, and dodgy power supplies that may require soldering or chassis adjustments.

    Source
  • The poly-aftertouch keybed is prone to failure due to solder point cracks, requiring reflowing or wire replacement after extended use.

    Source

Build quality

  • Corrosion on exterior cases may indicate water damage, affecting sensitive key assemblies and proprietary electronics, which are difficult to repair or replace.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The TS-10 is noted for compatible soundsets with EPS and later Ensoniq samplers, offering a wide variety of options, though many are not free.

    Source
  • Excels at creating realistic instrument sounds and new-age style pads, ideal for specific music genres.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The TS-10 is comparable to the Ensoniq VFX, offering sample loading capabilities, which the VFX lacks, enhancing its transwave creation potential.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners suggest upgrading the RAM to its maximum capacity and updating the OS EPROM for optimal performance.

Critic Reviews

Ensoniq TS10 synthesiser (MT Aug 93)

muzines.co.uk

The Ensoniq TS-10 synthesizer is a powerhouse for performing musicians, boasting an impressive array of 300 sounds, expandability features, and a highly sophisticated sonic architecture. Its user-friendly design makes it accessible, with performance controls like velocity-sensitive keys and polyphonic aftertouch enhancing its appeal. However, it doesn't support General MIDI and lacks battery-backed RAM, which might be a dealbreaker for some. Despite these quirks, its synthesis capabilities and rich sound palette make it a standout choice for serious musicians looking for a versatile instrument.
