Description
The Ensoniq VFX Synth was initially released as a performance type synthesizer in 1989. It was soon followed by the release of the VFX-SD, which included some updated waveforms (drum waves), a 24-track sequencer and a floppy drive. Both models were equipped with the Ensoniq Signal Processing (ESP) chip for 24-bit effects. The VFX-SD also included two AUX outs, which allowed for a total of 4 outputs from the synth for more routing flexibility. The initial models were 21-voice polyphony, and in latter models of the VFX-SD (I/II) and the SD-1, the polyphony was 32.1

On the Boards of Canada Twoism forum, user oliveoil22 demonstrated that Boards of Canada utilized the Ensoniq VFX-SD (or similar SD-1/VFX), as evidenced by videos where the user plays the exact preset on "Everything You Do Is a Balloon" from the 1996 EP "Hi Scores". In addition, one can hear the same "saw-o-life" preset layered in the song "Oirectine" from their 1995 EP "Twoism."
The Ensoniq VFX SD can be seen 1:37 in this video. Its June 2020 Reverb.com listing dates it to 1990.
Keyboard Presents: Classic Rock, ed. by Ernie Rideout (Backbeat Books 2010), p. 131.
In the video, the VFX-SD is the lower of the two synths facing the audience - the one he uses for the brassy stabs during the middle instrumental section (from 4:20).
Tony used all three versions: on the record it is the Ensoniq VFX. For the 1991 tour rehearsals, he is still using the VFX. Somewhere during the American leg of the 1992 tour he switched to the VFX-SD. And somewhere during the European leg he switched to the SD1 while having the VFX-SD behind his rack as a spare. He then continued to use the SD1 on the Strictly Inc. record.
This article lists his onstage equipment as "Farfisa Compact Duo; Ensoniq VFX SD2; Zoom 9010; Midiverb II; Tascam 234; Akai S950; Carver amp/2 wedges; separate monitor system for his vocals and the rest of the band PA"
