Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Fender Artist Series Joe Strummer Telecaster.

Mods and upgrades

  • Fender road worn bridges, identical to Joe Strummer signature, are cheaper without his name; some buy from Stratosphere on eBay.

    Source
  • Some consider sanding down the relic finish to create a more blended, natural look, though this carries the risk of worsening the appearance.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Joe Strummer pickups sound Clash-like: less bass, more treble, less boomy than 60s pickups; construction quality of 60s pickups is superior.

    Source
  • The Jason Isbell and Chrissie Hynde models feature more subtle and realistic relic finishes, which are generally preferred over the Joe Strummer Telecaster's exaggerated appearance.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Joe Strummer pickups, while stylistically appropriate for Clash sounds, resemble regular Tex Mex pickups.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • The official Joe Strummer signature model is considered overpriced given its simplicity and historical wear.

    Source
  • The Joe Strummer Telecaster is priced at $1,800, which many find unreasonable given the perceived low quality of the relic finish compared to Fender's Custom Shop relics.

    Source

Build quality

  • The relic finish on the Joe Strummer Telecaster appears to resemble vinyl stickers, making it look less authentic and more like a decal application.

    Source

User experience

  • Some owners report disappointment with the relic job, describing it as cartoonish or resembling a child's toy decal, which detracts from its intended vintage aesthetic.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Enthusiasts suggest that owning the Joe Strummer Telecaster might be less about authenticity and more about its unique aesthetic appeal, despite its controversial finish quality.

Fender Joe Strummer Telecaster review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Fender Artist Series Joe Strummer Telecaster is a fitting tribute to the legendary Clash guitarist, offering a unique aesthetic with its aged neck and special design. Priced at £839, it's a great value, especially with its Custom Shop vibes. However, tonally, it doesn't differ much from a standard Mexican Tele, which could be a letdown for some. Despite this, the guitar's playability shines, particularly for rhythm players, making it a great choice for fans of Strummer's iconic style. Overall, a fantastic purchase for collectors and punk rock enthusiasts alike.

Review: Fender Joe Strummer Telecaster

mixdownmag.com.au

Fender's Joe Strummer Telecaster is a heartfelt homage to The Clash icon's cherished instrument, packed with vintage charm and punk-rock authenticity. The road-worn finish and period-accurate hardware make it a collector's dream and a reliable workhorse for gigging musicians. While the faux aging might not fool purists, the guitar's build quality, resonant sound, and custom single-coil pickups deliver versatility and classic Tele tones. Despite its steep price for a Mexican-made model, it offers a quality playing experience that captures the spirit of Strummer. An enticing option for fans and players alike.

Sexy and cool twist on a classic.

Most of my guitar heroes play (or have played) Telecasters. So, time for some hero worship. It's a fabulously modded guitar. Strip back the ageing and it's a hot Tele, but still genetically Leo's baby through and through. It's got a rougher, snarlier tone than my other teles, but musically so, and pushes my Princeton just a touch harder. I'm not generally a fan of Rosewood finger-boards, hence the star knocked off, but that's purely personal preference. I personally didn;t use the included stickers to make it 100% Strummer perfect, and instead used a few I've collected along the way. I'm sure Joe wouldn't have minded.

Who wouldn't love this guitar?

What punk rocker wouldn't love this guitar, c'mon! I can't write a proper review because I haven't really played it. I do take it out of it's case and look at it from time to time. I'm still learning to play so I'm sticking to my Austin acoustic (yeah, I know, fancy stuff, but it works for me.)

#teletuesday with @pippadarlin @fender This tele is a 2007 joe strummer artist series ... his original guitar was a 1966 sunburst. Joe being joe spray painted it black and gray and gave it many face lifts over the years. Me being me and in the spirit of Joe sanded it completely down and then added elements of my roots ... the Ohio license plate and my parents birth year. #joestrummer #theclash
