Gibson Memphis 1958 ES-335 VOS

guitar.com

With its blend of vintage aesthetics and modern playability, the Gibson 1958 ES-335 VOS is a delightful nod to its iconic roots. The design marries the best of both worlds – the classic look and feel of a '58 model with sensible modern updates like a comfortable neck angle and robust bridge. The MHS pickups deliver a rich, dynamic sound, making it a versatile choice for various genres. However, the pickups' susceptibility to microphonic squeal under high gain could be a concern for rock players on tight stages. Despite this, the guitar's overall resonance, balance, and tonal depth shine, making it an outstanding choice for enthusiasts of the original design.

In the Chile Lollapalooza Concert (and many others since 2020) have seen Nick swapping his trusty Riviera for a Gibson ES-335 in a traditional vintage sunburst. Notably he has a Bigsby vibrola system installed. In the linked YouTube video of the concert, you can see his guitar very clearly at 11:04. Note the distinct headstock shape, dot inlays, and vintage kluson tuning keys.

Tom asks John to pick another guitar from the vault, and at 8:04 he begins to talk about his 3 tone sunburst 335 as John hands it to him. He mentions he got the guitar from Gruhn's Guitars in Nashville, TN, at the behest of John's buddy "Greg" who had convinced Tom to purchase it, perhaps Greg Koch? Who can really say...

"This is a '58 335, first year, with the unbound fretboard... That's another Gruhn's guitar, that your buddy Greg talked me into buying..."

At 8:33 Tom begins to tell the story this guitar being put to the test against another 335 he'd owned previously, just before playing it plugged into his rig.

"I had a '58 that I loved before I got this... I kept comparing, I can't afford to keep both of them... I couldn't decide which one I liked better, but I ended up going with this one, a little bit lighter."
