Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about IK Multimedia TONEX.

Features and functionality

  • The input trim setting is crucial but challenging to adjust across different captures, affecting tone and introducing subtle unwanted artifacts like crackles or buzzes.

    Source
  • The Tonex One includes amp/cab simulations, overdrive, fuzz, a compressor, and reverb, making it a versatile all-in-one solution for various sound needs.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Users find the Tonex software interface cumbersome, with issues distinguishing if changes are saved on the device or computer, complicating live setups.

    Source
  • Owners recommend creating and saving tones via the Tonex software before transferring them to the pedal, as it's more user-friendly than using the pedal as an interface.

    Source

Build quality

  • Despite being affordable, the Tonex pedal's build quality is perceived as cheap, with knobs criticized for their small size, making adjustments difficult in live settings.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Tonex is noted to be noisier compared to higher-end models like Kemper, with a less effective noise gate, necessitating external solutions like the ISP Decimator.

    Source
  • Users find the Tonex One's amp modeling superior to Line6 gear, highlighting its authentic sound reproduction, especially when used with in-ear monitors (IEMs) for direct input setups.

    Source
  • The built-in compressor, while effective, is not frequently used by those who own high-end models like the Empress compressor, indicating a preference for dedicated pedals.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Tonex isn't ideal for live gigs due to software and noise issues, although it integrates well with existing pedalboards for home use.

    Source
  • The Tonex One serves effectively as a backup amp or headphone amp, with low latency making it suitable as an IR loader for recording and live play.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners report difficulty maintaining consistent input trim settings for multiple guitars, impacting sound quality, especially with varied pickup types like lipstick tubes and humbuckers.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Some users suggest upgrading the power supply to reduce noise, as the stock option may contribute to unwanted interference.

Critic Reviews

IK Multimedia ToneX Pedal review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

Excellent amp modeling and customizable tones make the IK Multimedia ToneX a strong contender in its price range. While its limited effects and a less intuitive interface may frustrate some users, the superb sound quality and additional software unlocks provide great value. However, the mono input and absence of an effects loop could deter those seeking a more versatile setup. Overall, if amp fidelity is your main concern, the ToneX shines brightly.

IK Multimedia Tonex Pedal

soundonsound.com

The IK Multimedia Tonex Pedal brilliantly translates the innovative amp-capturing technology into a portable format, offering an impressive array of 150 Tone Model presets that sound remarkably authentic. With intuitive controls and the ability to bypass cab modeling, it excels for both stage and studio use. However, the omission of a tremolo effect leaves some tonal options on the table. Overall, it’s a fantastic tool for guitarists seeking versatility and quality, making it a worthy addition to any pedalboard.

Maybe I'm just old? This thing just sounds bad and isn't easy to navigate

I swear I could not get a good sound to come out of this thing to save my life. I tried damn near everything, I watched youtube videos on how to get started, how to properly EQ the amps/patches and I could get pretty good cleans and crunch's but I just could not make any of the lead or high gain models sound like anything other than an ice pick to the forehead. I even purchased presets from IK Multimedia and it still sounded like ass. I felt like I wasted my money on this entire experience. I wanted a rack mounted solution that I could use with my band, I've seen nashville guys do it, but I just could not get a good enough rock tone. A part of me thinks IK has rigged the market and given this unit and the ToneX One pedal to influencers and paid them to provide positive content. The process of registering the device is oddly confusing and downloading the editor was a pain, I needed to go online and find a reddit post that explained what I had to do. I don't think I've ever been as disappointed with a product that had this much hype behind it since the DOD Crossroads pedal. The Pro's, it does have really good build quality. Cleans and crunch sounds aren't bad. I dunno, I could go on how much this pedal disappointed me but I feel like I'd be beating a dead horse.

5 alternative and related items for IK Multimedia TONEX, curated by the Equipboard community.

Line 6 HX Stomp Guitar Multi-Effects Floor Processor

$599.00 - $699.99

similar sound

It basically does the same thing so similar sounding

Neural DSP Quad Cortex

$1,449.00 - $2,049.99

high-end alternative

The Quad Cortex is basically like the TONEX Pedal (well, for all the same reasons in functionality and intention), except much, MUCH more expensive (US$1700 as of 2024). Despite the fact that the TONEX Pedal doesn't come with a chorus effect and the Quad Cortex does, it does NOT mean that throwing away $1700 on a floorboard modeler would be any more wise than just buying an actual chorus pedal for merely $220.

IK Multimedia ToneX One

$99.00 - $539.00

similar sound cheaper alternative

A much smaller, pedalboard friendly version that uses the same the Tonex software.

Walrus Audio Mako MKII ACS1 Amp and Cab Simulator Pedal

$429.00 - $477.00

high-end alternative

Much better sounds out of the box, easier to use and navigate, hard to get a bad sound out of it. Options to deep dive and tone shape are there. Works great with other pedals. Smaller, lighter and so much easier to find sounds that fit your style of play. Designed for the player that likes to bend over, turn some knobs and rock out.
