Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Kawai K4.

Features and functionality

  • Some Kawai K4 patches sound glitch-like by design, particularly "Junglelife," which uses resonance for a high-pitched sound akin to birds.

    Source
  • Effects settings can significantly alter patch sounds, with effects slots ranging from reverb to distortion, and unique combinations available from 1-32.

    Source
  • The built-in effects are noted for their ability to cut through a mix with a harsh, distinct presence, enhancing the instrument's industrial sound capabilities.

    Source
  • The K4 is known for its "industrial" and "cold" sound, which was highly recommended for dance music due to its distinctive filter.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Replacing the RAM battery is common; a CR 2032 battery is easily removable and replaceable, often needed for proper functioning.

    Source
  • A mismatch of effects data between different patch imports can cause patches to sound incorrect or overly glitchy.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • To restore original presets and effects, use the K4INT.SYX file with proper MIDI settings: RCC, RCV EXEC=ON, OMNI=OFF, RCV CH=1, and INTERNAL PROTECT=OFF.

    Source
  • Using Sysex files from the Kawai US website or a Google Drive link can help resolve patch and effects issues effectively.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners appreciate the K4's ability to produce both lo-fi ambient pads and intense, high-resonance techno patches, ideal for late-80s/early-90s digital sounds.

    Source

Critic Reviews

Kawai K4 (SOS Jan 90)

muzines.co.uk

The Kawai K4 offers impressive sound versatility, from lush pads to sharp leads, thanks to its 256 high-quality waveforms and onboard effects. The 16-bit synth provides a clean, stunning audio quality that outshines its predecessor, the K1. While its multitimbral capabilities and ease of programming make it a strong contender against other synths like the Roland LA or Korg M1, there are some drawbacks. The separate power supply and flimsy key weights can be issues, and the drum section, though useful, may detract from its primary function as a synthesizer. Despite these minor flaws, the K4's synthesis power and value for money make it a compelling choice for musicians.

Featured on its own page as a piece of gear used by Legowelt at some point. His words about this synthesizer: "All the ingredients to stir your imagination into a porridge of granulated spaced out FAT succulent digital bliss are in your hands with this machine. Capable of a broad range of colourful sweet spots from thumping fast envelope Moog-style basses, penetrating 303 style acid to crystal harp-like analog tones to evolving dreamy hazy textures. If any synth would be a stoner this one is guilty as charged. Its a bit like Roland’s L.A synthesis but not as sophisticated deeply programmable and more rougher on the edges." Also, the website contains a K4 sample pack by Legowelt.

What kind of gear did you use at the time?

R: “Caustic” was a pretty minimal set up. All we used was the Atari, an Akai S1000 and S950, a Minimoog, Micromoog, Pro One and a Kawai K4 for strings… Less is more I’m starting to think! We did have a couple disks of Adrian Sherwood drums and Yello bass sounds for the Akai that were used a lot.
