Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Korg 03R/W.

Features and functionality

  • The 03R/W with the 'X191' ROM displays only numbers in the prog section, featuring aggressive piano and organ sounds, suggesting a unique sound character.

    Source
  • It's suggested that factory presets might not be burned into the ROM, highlighting a potential area for customization upon restoration.

    Source
  • The Korg 03R/W can potentially be controlled using MIDI CC mapping rather than hacking the remote input, offering flexibility with modern MIDI controllers.

    Source
  • The Korg 03R/W's SysEx function 41h allows setting parameters like cutoff frequency and envelope generators, requiring around a dozen bytes for each parameter change.

    Source
  • The Korg 03R/W allows high-resolution control (16384 steps) for parameters like filter cutoff using high and low bytes in SysEx data.

    Source

User experience

  • A previous owner noted the combi section is limited to acoustic pianos, indicating a possible limitation or specialization of this prototype ROM.

    Source
  • Users note challenges in smoothly modulating parameters with SysEx, dependent on how Korg implemented the operating system.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • The ROM labeled 'X191' is believed to be part of a third-party sound card development that may have been abandoned, offering a potential modding opportunity for enthusiasts.

    Source
  • Creating a custom MIDI controller using Max/MSP allows for precise parameter control, potentially replicating the rare KORG RE1 functionality.

    Source
  • An Arduino or similar device could be used to construct a custom controller for sending SysEx messages to the Korg 03R/W.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • The unit's waveforms are supplied by mask ROMs, not the 'X191' ROM itself, indicating that any additional patches might not affect the core sound engine.

    Source
  • Some users face challenges when using MIDI controllers, with issues in mapping knobs to parameters beyond volume, suggesting the need for sysex data for full control.

    Source
  • The Behringer BCR 2000 can send SysEx messages for external parameter control, though it requires programming via a software package.

    Source
  • The Electra One is a premium MIDI controller capable of handling SysEx, but may not be cost-effective if only used for the Korg 03R/W.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The 03R/W's sound is favored in Nordic extreme metal, with its tone blending well with distorted guitars, as evidenced by its use in live setups by bands like Nightwish.

Korg 03R/W Synth Module (SOS May 92)

muzines.co.uk

The Korg 03R/W synth module impresses with its compact design and robust build, inheriting the sound architecture of the 01/W keyboard. Its standout feature is the inclusion of General MIDI support, although this may not be a major draw for professional users. The unit's built-in stereo digital effect processors offer a broad range of high-quality effects, enhancing its appeal. However, the lack of a sequencer and the omission of some features like Waveshaping are notable drawbacks. The cramped and fiddly front panel also detracts from user experience, making the optional RE1 remote editor a near necessity. Overall, while the 03R/W is a capable and versatile module, it may feel overpriced for those primarily interested in its GM capabilities.

Korg 01/W Pro & 03R/W Synths (MT Jun 92)

muzines.co.uk

Korg's 03R/W module stands out as a budget-friendly rackmount option, providing much of the rich sonic palette found in its pricier siblings. While it omits the Waveshaping feature, which limits its sonic depth compared to the 01R/W, it introduces General MIDI compatibility, broadening its appeal for diverse musical applications. The 03R/W smartly balances affordability with quality, making it a compelling choice for those seeking high-caliber sounds without breaking the bank. However, the reliance on a fiddly interface may deter those seeking straightforward, hands-on editing. Overall, it's a well-rounded module for musicians prioritizing sound over features.

Notes

This is was my first GM expander. It opened me the door to multitrack sequences played back by a single instrument. Since then I had to compose my sequences using several synthesizers driven by a sequencer. 03R/W has also a Program/Combination section that sounds stil good today.
