Owner Insights

Use cases and applications

  • Sydney supports up to six loops with independent start, length, loop points, and bpm sync, making it ideal for DJ-style chops and sound collages.

    Source
  • Owners find the Kiev, Chiang Mai, and Helsinki gadgets particularly appealing for pianists, offering ready-to-play patches that minimize time spent on sound creation.

    Source
  • The Tokyo gadget, when paired with LFOs in S+H mode, particularly the PCS503 drum, yields unpredictable and dynamic results, appealing for experimental sound design.

    Source
  • Vancouver is suited for lo-fi, grungy textures and basic instrument playback, with a 10-second sample limit and a sub oscillator for added sonic depth.

    Source
  • Gadget is praised for its immediacy and ease, making it ideal for quick song sketches and ideas, particularly useful in travel scenarios like flights.

    Source

User experience

  • Some owners find generic "Gadget" icons unhelpful in identifying instruments, suggesting that unique icons for each gadget would enhance user experience and make them feel more like standalone plugins.

    Source
  • Users often end up purchasing all sampler gadgets for comprehensive sample manipulation within Gadget, despite wishing for a single, more versatile sampler.

    Source
  • Some users enjoy using Gadget on the Nintendo Switch for its portable capabilities, highlighting its versatility beyond iOS devices.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Users find it cumbersome that locked gadgets remain visible in AUv3 plugin lists, making it difficult to avoid selecting unavailable options in other DAWs.

    Source
  • Gadget users report issues with data transfer when upgrading to newer iPads, with potential loss of paid modules and sounds.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Gadget instruments are likened to "alternate reality Korg Volcas," offering simple synths that handle specific tasks efficiently with low CPU usage, ideal for stacking numerous instances.

    Source
  • The Vancouver sampler incorporates a sub oscillator with sine, triangle, and pulse waveforms, adding unique textures to sample-based compositions.

    Source
  • Gadget 3 is commended for its smooth workflow and vast instrument collection, but lacks support as an AUv3 host, limiting use of external plugins.

    Source
  • Stockholm allows loading eight loops per instance and provides comprehensive loop slicing, complementing Abu Dhabi's 10-second max sample time and 16 fixed slice markers.

    Source
  • Vancouver offers two sample layers and records start/end/loop point motions, while Sydney lacks recordable tuning and uses a rough timestretching algorithm reminiscent of old samplers.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Initial purchase may seem misleading; the app offers 20 gadgets, but additional purchases are needed for full access to all 40 advertised gadgets.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Gadget is seen as a powerful groovebox/songwriting tool more than a full DAW, with stronger mixing features found in Logic Pro and Cubasis.

I’d buy an iPad just for this

It was good at version one, and 5 years later on the second 2.0/Gadget2 it is becoming quite the powerhouse.

So easy to use and very powerful.

My most used of all music software by a long shot
