Description

Style 17 Martin guitars used Rosewood for their back and sides, with a fan-braced top. In 1929, the 2-17 design changed with a new finish and binding pattern. These updated 2-17s were referred to as "new style" or in some cases as the #25.

Catch of the Day: 1930 Martin 2-17 - Fretboard Journal

fretboardjournal.com

The 1930 Martin 2-17 is a charming relic with a storied past and a distinctive all-mahogany construction. It stands out as the first non-Hawaiian Martin designed for steel strings without a custom order. This model was a budget-friendly option in its time, reflecting both Martin's craftsmanship and the economic climate of the Great Depression. While this particular guitar has survived a curious gunshot incident, the repair work appears meticulous, likely preserving its tonal qualities. However, potential buyers should consider its historical quirks and the asking price on eBay, which exceeds $850. The review offers a fascinating look into vintage Martin guitars, but the gunshot history might not appeal to all collectors.
