Critic Reviews

MXR M76 Studio Compressor review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The MXR M76 Studio Compressor is a classy performer that excels in providing transparent compression without altering your tone. Modeled after studio classics like the Urei 1176, it offers versatile compression ratios, attack, and release controls for precise dynamic shaping. The LED meter is highly practical, showing gain reduction levels at a glance. While it lacks the sonic signature of some other compressors, it's perfect for those seeking subtle, unobtrusive compression. The only downside noted is minimal, making it a solid choice for musicians looking to add studio-quality compression to their pedalboard.

Great pedal

This is an impeccable compressor for both guitar and bass, and it really ably recreates the sound of a rackmount compressor unit that would be used in the recording studio.

Lots of control, takes some practice to dial in

I have this compressor. It is also known as the M76. The MXR M87 Bass Compressor is also the same pedal, just different colors and graphics. I think that the place to start with this pedal is the input knob. That knob really gets the compressor to kick in (or not) based on signal coming in. Once you get the signal to make some of the LEDs to light up, you can move on to the other knobs. Definitely a lot more control than your typical compressor, so if you don't like tweaking knobs, I'd stay away from this one. It also works great with bass - it doesn't cut the low end, which is a problem I had with the MXR Super Comp. Overall, I like this pedal, but it is definitely not something you can just take out of the box and use without reading the manual.

Great compressor!

An 1176 in a box, perfect for capturing those peaks. The top 3 of bass compressors for sure!
