Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about MXR M228 Dyna Comp Deluxe.

Features and functionality

  • The MXR Dyna Comp Deluxe is a VCA-style compressor, known for a more "squished" sound compared to optical compressors, which offer a colorful boost.

    Source
  • A compressor can transform clean tones by adding sustain and making multiple notes sound at consistent volumes, akin to a clean overdrive effect.

    Source
  • The MXR Dyna Comp tends to distort quickly in a pleasant way, which can be advantageous for certain music styles like funk.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Compressors are especially beneficial in clean setups with lots of headroom, balancing highs and lows without significantly altering the sound.

    Source
  • For players using distortion or fuzz, a compressor might not add much due to inherent compression in those effects, but it enhances clean tone dynamics.

    Source
  • The Dyna Comp is noted to have a high compression ratio, potentially rolling off some low and high frequencies, which may affect tonal balance on bass.

    Source
  • The MXR Dyna Comp's "squishy" sound is particularly favored by funk guitarists for its distinctive tonal coloring.

    Source
  • Players in funk bands have found that mastering hand dynamics can reduce the need for a compressor, but the Dyna Comp's tone is still valued for its unique sound.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Optical compressors like the Diamond are favored for less squish and colorful boost, whereas VCA compressors like the MXR Dyna Comp offer a more compressed feel.

    Source
  • The MXR M87 is a specialized bass compressor from the same brand, providing an alternative tailored for bass players.

    Source
  • The Keeley Bassist pedal is highlighted as part of an iconic setup used by Laura from Khruangbin, praised for achieving a desirable tone.

    Source
  • The Boss LMB-3 is suggested as a budget-friendly option with a ratio control, offering more flexibility than some compressors that only have a blend control.

    Source
  • The Orange Kongpressor is noted for versatility, offering both transparent and colored compression, with ample headroom to avoid distortion, unlike the MXR Dyna Comp.

    Source

User experience

  • Players report compressors as "betterizer" pedals, likening them to EQ pedals in their capacity to professionalize the guitar's output.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Some users recommend purchasing a used MXR Dyna Comp to experience its tonal color without a significant investment.

MXR Dyna Comp Deluxe Review | Squid Guitar Inc.

wordpress.com

The MXR Dyna Comp Deluxe strikes a balance between utility and sound, boasting a blend knob that allows musicians to retain dynamics while enjoying increased sustain. It's reliable, sturdy, and delivers classic compression ideal for funk, R'n'B, and blues. However, the additional attack and modulation features may feel redundant for some players, as they might not appreciate their impact. Overall, while it might not redefine compression effects, it certainly enhances them, making it a worthy addition to any pedalboard.

Another one ....

After replacing my OG '75 DynaComp while building a new board I've gotta admit to missing the OG squish, not going to miss having to replace the battery, or hoping it doesn't grow legs though. The Deluxe intantly cleaned up mt signal path, even though it's a different animal.

velma_cassidy

Good quality compressor.

Someone stole my EHX Tone Corset, Animal Pedal Car Crush & Relaxing Walrus during a gig. So I bought this compressor to replace the Tone Corset. I have to admit the noise floor of this pedal is pretty lower than the Tone Corset. Rest of the stuff feel similar.
