My favorite of the early 80s CEM-based polyphonics. majestic tone with angry attitude.
Best of the early 80s, Curtis chip -based polyphonics i.e. utlizing the famous 33x0 serie chips.
love using it for sizzley buzzy cem pads/strings, voxy high resonance dark pads. it limited but sounds bigger than life. 12dB filter is its characteristic trademark tone. 24dB setting is not bad but i don't use it as often.
Great Vintage Board - Does not grow old well
My dream keyboard has become a boat anchor. Although this was a powerhouse from the 80s, it does not age well. There are numerous analog semis on the main board as well as the voice cards and they simply drift out of range over time. Since these are unique parts, replacements are sketchy and hard to find. My OB-Xa has reduced itself to a door stop.

that's a pity. you need to invest some time/money it can be as good as new. it's one of the easiest vintages to work on.
- it needs new capacitors, in PSU as well as voiceboard/motherboard
it needs new multiturn trimmers on vco pitch as well as linearity and high range
finally, if needed, new bushings, so your keys are evened out, and play softly without clunkiness.
all of it can be done in an afternoon with a capable tech. not a hundred bucks in parts all of the above.

"The OBXa I got very recently — it really sticks out when you record it, piercing without needing volume. The first one I got kept wiping memories, a real worrier because all I kept getting was white noise and people thought I was doing it deliberately!"
In an Instagram post, Julian "J3PO" Waterfall Pollack showcases the Oberheim OB-Xa synthesizer, highlighting its role in his musical setup.
"For ages we used the OBXa because I accidentally found this brilliant bass patch on it. We used it on the Sidekicks album and I kept on getting phone calls to come and play bass on other albums."
Tom Bailey refers to the OB-Xa as his workhorse synth. He first acquired it in 1981 during the Set sessions, and used it on the underground Thompson Twins hit "In The Name of Love". Eventually it became a prominent feature of their music when they were at the peak of their popularity, on albums Quick Step & Side Kick, Into The Gap and Here's To Future Days.
According to Keyboard magazine August 1984 issue, 95% of the synthesizer sounds (including bass lines) on Quick Step and Into The Gap were played on an OB-Xa. The other 5% of synths were played on a Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 (by Joe Leeway) and a Pro One (by Tom Bailey). Plus, on Here's To Future Days, basslines were done on the OB-Xa and Nile Rodgers' Casio CZ-5000.
Effects-wise, the Oberheim is connected to an AMS reverb and a Roland Dimension D.
Live, Tom's OB-Xa was played by keyboardist Carrie Both on the Into The Gap tour.
In the video "David Rosenthal - A Keyboard Serenade" by APlace in Time, David Rosenthal is seen playing an Oberheim OB-Xa among other synthesizers, including a Memorymoog Plus, Emu Emulator, Minimoog, and several Roland models.
In a YouTube video by Alex Ball titled "How the Terminator 2 music was made," Brad Fiedel is mentioned using the Oberheim OB-Xa synthesizer during the creation of the original Terminator score.
Lisa Coleman used an Oberheim OB-Xa with Prince in the mid 1980s.
